Knife Training
I just took my first knife defense class today. I really learned a lot the first day and I am going to keep it up. I started collecting Spyderco knives a few years ago and I thought I should learn how to use them in that role, if need be. I highly recommend taking a MBC class if you can, It's worth it.

Re: Knife Training
Could you provide some more details? Is it a one time thing or did you sign up for weekly classes or something like that? Expensive?

Re: Knife Training
My friends and I used to train with knives about a million years ago, but at some point I became a pacifist. I'm not morally opposed to people defending themselves with knives, but it's just not my personal preference. The reason I mention it is that I think the Kubotan is a more versatile weapon and many of the strikes are similar to knives and would compliment your training.
(EDIT: Though I am morally opposed to people training specifically to gruesomely disembowel their opponents.)
Also, not one person has every construed one of my tactical pens as a weapon. It can sail right past TSA checkpoints and I can use it in plain view at for example the doctor's office. And even when someone says "cool pen" and I tell them it's a self defense weapon, they still don't get weird about it like they do seeing knives. On the contrary, they usually pepper me with questions about it.
So it's probably worth looking into the Kubotan if you haven't already, since it's a complimentary weapon.

Re: Knife Training
We are learning Martial Blade Concepts. The instructors teaching are MBC certified and I will be taking weekly classes for $15 for an hour class. It is pay week per week as you go. It seems It's defense oriented and not offensive. We learn armed and open hand techniques to defend yourself from an attacker and ultimately stop the attacker and get to a point of egress. but...if someone were to come at me with a knife and I had a point of egress, I would take it, as would anyone. The techniques can also be used open hand against open hand. I had only one class so far, so I am sure there is more than I could tell you further down the road. I must say though, the instructors are top notch.
btw, it's not about gruesomely disemboweling anyone, it's about stopping an attack and hopefully save your own life. and it doesn't hurt to find something you like to stay active and learn something new.

Re: Knife Training
Yeah, I wasn't directing that at you, sorry. I was thinking more of their Civilian model and how some people train with it and are glib about giving it nicknames like "the man opener" and such. Certainly keeping yourself safe is the primary goal and your attacker's well being is a low priority. I just wouldn't advocate training slash attacks with a hook type weapon like the Civilian, not to mention I think there's almost as big of a chance of catching a weapon like that on your opponent's jacket or something and having it ripped from your hand.losinground wrote: btw, it's not about gruesomely disemboweling anyone, it's about stopping an attack and hopefully save your own life. and it doesn't hurt to find something you like to stay active and learn something new.
And I've also always said that having to defend yourself is the first failure of your self defense system. I used to know a few martial artists that just liked to fight, so they would always mysteriously find themselves in situations where they needed to fight. So I like what you said about taking an egress as your first option. I think the goal of self defense is to keep you and your loved ones safe whatever that takes, and sometimes it takes a bruised ego. So, I've always thought that humility and de-escalation are just as important as whatever techniques people are learning. 99.9% percent of fights can be avoided by saying "you are right, sorry" or "sorry, drinks are on me" or "my bad" or whatever the kids say these days.

Re: Knife Training
no, no civilian here. Using Yo2, delicas, and enduras for training. I carry a delica most of the time. I would never want to be attacked but I were I just want to have a chance of survival. I enjoy this type of training as well. I am in law enforcement, so learning how to protect others as well as myself is sorta built in me.

Re: Knife Training
Oh, yeah, definitely, and thanks for your service. I see the Native I usually EDC as a backup weapon, but it would never be my first choice. It's not a bad weapon of last resort and challenging to defend against. I think everyone should have training. My son did good for a few years before he got bored with it. My daughter wouldn't take any kind of martial arts but at least she has pepper spray and a stun gun.losinground wrote:no, no civilian here. Using Yo2, delicas, and enduras for training. I have a friend who's a cop and (grand master?) martial arts instructor. I did his web site, martialwarrior.us and you guys would probably get along famously. I think he teaches mostly Korean stuff. I met him on one of the flashlight boards.

Re: Knife Training
no thanks needed. I appreciate the information about your friend. I will check him out.
Probably should be off-topic or MBC titled.
Anything related to Michal Janich I trust is quality stuff. There are a few others but a very select few.
Sadly in this day and age (no offense to particulars) most people are just looking to make money and have marginal skills of their own. It's the 80/90's strip mall Karate/TKD mindset except replaced with MMA/Krav/Combatives. High demands, low requirements = $$$.
If your knife training doesn't involve a mouth guard, training knife, and padding it's prob crap. There should be impact and semi-frequent injuries. I would try to track the person's qualifications or find people with scars to prove they aren't mortgage brokers turned "deadly fighters" once the market crashed. :p

This is extremely sound advice. MBC is great, I trained it for about seven years, but you need to add a component that involves a noncompliant, aggressive opponent who can offer resisting pressure.Blerv wrote:Anything related to Michal Janich I trust is quality stuff. Re: Knife Training
I would love to find this sort of training. Is there a website I couldbise to find MBC trainers?
On my radar: 110V Military, Police 4 and some sweet Rex 45 Military action.

Unfortunately, ever since I got started with the kydex, I've had a lot less time to be able to make to Columbus with any regularity, but it makes me glad to see so many of the guys have tested or become instructors.Michael Janich wrote:Thanks, also, to Blerv and Studey for the kind words. I spent a LOT of time with the Columbus crew and can personally vouch for about a dozen people in that list.
MBC is also great if you don't have a martial arts background...Mike's done a great job on breaking things down, and you can really learn and build your martial skills. While I've pursued a lot of other training as well, I got my start with Mike and MBC, when it was still Martial Blade Craft! MBC built my technical skill more than any other single art or program. It's great way to get things started. Combine that with at least a few months in a boxing or MMA gym, and in BJJ or judo, and you've got a pretty solid hand-to-hand skillset.

The website does not break it down by location.
I will be in the Detroit Michigan area once I retire.
