The best atribute to look for in a knife that is carried specifically with self-defense in mind is length.

Length = Reach. In a knife attack, reach can mean everything.

Sure, if I were forced to use my Dodo for self-defense, I would if left no other option. However, it's extremely short blade would never be my first choice if another option existed.

Depending upon your local laws, it would be best to carry the largest blade legally allowed. Of course, concealability usually comes into the equation, as well.

In short, if local laws don't prohibit you from doing so, I can't imagine why someone would want to carry a tiny blade with the purpose of defense in mind; carry a longer blade!

Trust me, if someone every tries to kill you, and that knife is the only thing between you and death, you're going to want the largest knife possible (like maybe the Sword of Conan, lol!).
Just my experienced advice...

Hiya, Allen,

I also find that, for MBC/self defense, the Ronin just can't be beat. I've tried different carry positions and so far, my fav is at the 11 o'clock position(noon is my belt buckle) set up for right hand crossdraw. The Ronin is easily accessible with either hand. <img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

I usually carry in sets of two, left and right hand, depending on the situation I'm in. If I'm in a sheeple atmosphere I generally go with a Merlin/Delica setup or Spyderhawk/Endura combination. If I want a slightly larger set of folders I go with a Civilian/Military combination. When I can use my pocket carry fixed blade I go with the Spyderhawk or Civilian combined with a custom fixed blade version of the Military scaled up to a five inch blade.

The curved blades are are my left hand knives and are used in a defensive shielding manner to engage, trap or pass with a secondary use as a big freakin' claw. The straight blades are used for the offensive slashing and thrusting.

Aloha Mr. Treat!

Hmmmm, I like and have had great success training with the likes of the Merlin and Matriarch, along w/ the classic Delica/Endura combo... But you did say "one" right?

For me, that'd be my Delica oddly enough. I have trained with this model for years now. That's be my main reason for choosing her. Plus she's the one w/ me most of the time so I'd BETTER know what I'm doing w/ her in an SD role! Also, if i should lose her in a scuffle or it is seized as evidence, no big deal, I'd just get another one.

Now, if I were to lose say, my Blue PE Spyderhawk in an assault, I'd be pissed as it came from a good South African friend! I'd most likely be wearing a "nice" bright orange pre-trial uni for killing the perp!

God will put you over...if you let Him! John 14: 13,14...try it, it WORKS!

in an hierarchical order:
Li'l Temp PE leaf shape
Dodo SE, blue
Native III SE
Delica any FRN format

they're legal, have good handling characteristics and can all be carried tip-up in the same position.

I carry both a right hand straight plain edge blade and left hand curved serrated blade, generally paired by size. Blade length is determined by circumstances.

The pairs are:
Delica/Merlin
Endura/Spiderhawk or Matriarch
Military/Civilian
5" custom fixed blade/Civilian

The curved blade is used to slash and trap, the straight blade is used in cut and thrust.

I carry a medium fixed blade 4.5"Western wood double edged boot knife w/kydex sheath inside the waistband on my right hip and carry a folding FRN Delica in my right pocket as backup. Sometimes a Casco 21"telescoping baton replaces the boot knife.(downtown at night)
