What are your 3 favorite new knives in the 2016 catalog?
Re: What are your 3 favorite new knives in the 2016 catalog?
1. Pattada -- Love the elegant shape and I've been very happy with the N690co steel in my Urban. The wire clip seals the deal. IN!
2. Mantra 2 -- I do like the 1 a lot also, but since I already have a Domino, the 2 is more unique and thus more "justifiable".
3. Wolf Spyder -- I keep waiting for the Lil Temp 2 that never comes (Sal?!?!?), and this looks VERY similar in a lot of ways. If pricing ends up being more or less in line with other Golden G10 offerings, it will be hard to resist.
* edit - I just noticed the specs on the Pattada and didn't realize that it's basically Endura-sized, which is a bit large for my carry preferences, but I will have to handle one and see if the slimness makes it "seem" smaller...
---
Also on my radar of course are the HAP40 Delica and Stretch and the Gayle Bradley 2 (already preordered), but I already knew about those, so I'm not counting them as "new". :)
If I won the lotto or got adopted by Mark Zuckerberg, I'd love to have the Nirvana and Mamba, but those are a bit out of my pay grade.
Overall I'm very pleased with the offerings this year. Anytime there are WAY more knives that I want than I can afford, I feel like Spyderco is doing their job right!

I'd consider one in another steel, not really interested in the laminate.elena86 wrote:It breaks my heart to see that Caly3 is gone.

Ok, when I wrote this I hadn't read the specs yet, with the weight, size and bladesteel of the Mantra2 that is definitely gonna be #1..Joris Mo wrote:-S110V Native5 in FRN
-Pattada
-52100 Military
(Mantra2 is definitely in the top 4 as well..)
That means it could kick any of the above out of my top 3, most likely the Native since it might be great competition for it and I already have that in different blade steels.
The 52100 Mili might not happen because with the carbon fiber handles it will become quite expensive and won't add much to my Mili users, having a S30V CE and a Cruwear. (shame there isn't a SE S110V) On the other hand, it is a 52100 uncladded Mili!

I feel sort of the same. Sort of a "blah" Damascus pattern and I think the gigantic laser etched "40 Years" logo is ugly. I really wanted to like this more than I do.The Deacon wrote:I'll probably buy a 40th Native, but it doesn't excite me the way it would if it was in one of the Damasteel pattens I like. I'm glad to see I'm not the only one out there who saw some resemblances there between the handles on the Spyderwolf and Lil' Temp.
And I agree, there are numerous offerings for 2016 that are catching my attention... and we don't even know the full story on exclusives and what might be possible for mid-year release. Glad to be around right now! :)

Re: What are your 3 favorite new knives in the 2016 catalog?
Really only 2 catching my eye:
Pattada - looks like a elegant slim carry. Actual Pattadas are beautiful knives, mostly with natural handle scales.
Mantra - handled the prototypes at BLADE and really liked them. They flipped better than the Domino & the Southard in my opinion.
The Wolf Spyder is interesting, just would prefer a different steel with a scandi-edge and I'm not sure about that handle shape.
Of course price will be the big factor for me. Both knives I'm interested in are using atypical steel for Spyderco which usually means an increase in price. Missing the days when most of the Spyderco knives I liked were just above the $100 mark.

Re: What are your 3 favorite new knives in the 2016 catalog?
I've now had a chance to look at the new catalog and let it all sink in and then re look at it all objectively again.
Three favorites (and 95% chance of buying) in no particular order are :
Cooks knife - elegant handles (my knives are exposed on a magnetic bar in my kitchen rather than kept in drawers) and I love VG10 as an "everyday" steel.
Lil Lum - really enjoy the Large Lum and occasionally use my "mid-size" Lums so I'll need one of these for sure.
Blue PITS - I really like my first run PITS so it will only be a matter of time before this drops into my collection.
A few that I am less sure about and will probably grow on me with time :
Nirvana - If I didn't already have a BM 761 and a few Sebenzas, this would be a definite. Sure I realize the cost to produce this is high but I'm an old bullet set in my ways that has difficulty in getting his head around a $400 knife stamped "Taiwan" . If this was made by Lion Steel (makers of the Ti-Spine that I also have), I'd be all over it even with the knowledge that I'd need to re bevel it - it is an irrational opinion but that's the way it is. Having said that, I probably will break down and get one eventually.
Introvert - no idea what I'd do with this but I like it and will probably get one just to support Spyderco's passion for making off the wall designs.
I'm really exited that Spyderco continues to push the envelope with some of their designs. They might not suit my tastes of find a place in my collection but I really admire the willingness to commit cash to push the boundaries.
Is it just me or is the Caly 3.5 now the last Moki made Spyderco in the catalog? It would be a shame if that relationship was coming to an end.

I was wondering that myself...
I think the Firefly may be a Moki, but I could be wrong.

I don't know which ones but I think Moki may make some of the fixed blades.

Mantra 2, Wolfspyder, and Pattada are the top 3 for me.
But the Bradley 2 could take over 3rd spot: I would like to see a spine-shot of this knife, as I am curious if you could attach a lanyard to one of the stand-offs?
And the Lil Lum looks very good too. I wonder if the clip will really be that big relative to the size of the knife?

Wish it didn't have the 40 engraving as well (it's a collectors item and they will know anyway). Bit like the Spyker...jabba359 wrote:I feel sort of the same. Definitely. Might have bothered me more if it was stenciled on a Damasteel pattern I actually liked. I'm a lefty, so at least it's on the "back" side of the blade for me, but still.NoFair wrote:Wish it didn't have the 40 engraving as well (it's a collectors item and they will know anyway). I am in the same boat. The Deacon wrote:

I'll probably buy a 40th Native, but it doesn't excite me the way it would if ........
Possibly will buy few knives, including 40th Native, but no excitement about any at this time.
I love Natives, but not crazy about no liners and like few brothers above mentioned, I am really do not like huge 40. $360 is a lot of money for knife in my book and I have to love it, otherwise it is not worth it for me.
I like Mamba, but not for $300+, the same goes with Nirvanna.
