Re: Spyderco MANTRA!!!!! Oh boy!
It is definitely #1 on my must have list from the 2016 catalog!

Now that I know I am getting one, I am stressing trying to decide which one?! And NO, I cannot afford to "get both". :D

Get the 2. That thin blade profile seems like it would greatly suit you. Then, after you receive it and give it a proper baptism-of-fire on your salt water fish, you can make us all jealous with a sweet video or even just some cool pics! :)Surfingringo wrote:Now that I know I am getting one, I am stressing trying to decide which one?! Re: Spyderco MANTRA!!!!! Oh boy!
I probably will get the 2. Mainly because the 1 is so much like a Delica and I've got a hap40 en route as I type this. The only thing with the 2 is that I will absolutely have to grind that funky tip down as soon as I get it. Not a big deal, just have to decide if I'm going to have a smooth subtle curve or just take it down full flat.SpyderNut wrote:Get the 2. That thin blade profile seems like it would greatly suit you. Re: Spyderco MANTRA!!!!! Oh boy!
At that price I will also definitely get one.
Mantra2 for me, at 3mm the not so wide blade should still have a great grind and I love the "last minute" drop near the point.
(I'm actually working on my first few fixed blades and 2 out 3 also have a somewhat similar tip..)
For me this might end up being serious competition for my lw Native5's, especially as long as there won't be one of those in M4.
Would be a great working pair with a SE Pacific Salt or maybe someday a SE Military.

This is an excellent strategy. It can and will work for ALL Spydercos because in time all models will be "rare" eventually and inflation alone will make them "more expensive later on". This gives a solid foundation for unlimited enabled buying.SpyderNut wrote:
P.S. I find it helps to have a legitimate... er, or at least somewhat legitimate, reason for buying said item. (E.g. "Honey, this is a rare one. If I don't buy it now, it'll only be more expensive later on and..." :D It kinda' gives one a leg to stand on.
Absolutely brilliant.
The funding, on the other hand, could be the tricky part..........

Re: Spyderco MANTRA!!!!! Oh boy!
No Problem. I actually wasn't going to buy a Delica HAP40, but then I bought the Endura HAP40 and loved the color and steel so much that I just felt compelled to also buy the Delica. Its hard with all these choices for knives. I'm intrigued by the Mantra, but have some reservations about the design. I've been more into the Spyderco fixed blades lately... the Cook's knife looks quite interesting (and very reasonably priced), and I've been gunning for the Proficient, but it's so expensive, I haven't shelled out the cash for it yet. I'll have to think about the Mantra.Surfingringo wrote:Thank you, I found it on BHQ too. Jeez man, I think I'm gonna have to get one. I was trying to keep it to just the hap40 Delica and the upcoming BladeHQ pm2 in m4. Ugghhh...I might actually get one of these instead of the pm2. I'm so confused!!!!!! hahahaha

They're both 3 mm thick, which means that the Mantra #1 with the wider blade is going to have the better blade geometry (thinning behind the edge), etc.SpyderNut wrote:Get the 2. That thin blade profile seems like it would greatly suit you.

Re: Spyderco MANTRA!!!!! Oh boy!
You're correct on the thickness of the blade. However, I meant "thin" as in height of the blade. :) Sorry about that...captnvegtble wrote:They're both 3 mm thick, which means that the Mantra #1 with the wider blade is going to have the better blade geometry (thinning behind the edge), etc.SpyderNut wrote:Get the 2. Re: Spyderco MANTRA!!!!! Oh boy!
Hmm. A gentle curve would likely compliment that blade very well. Perhaps you could do a mock-up on paper first to see what it'll look like? I think I'd prefer the curve over a straight line. It would likely soften the design a bit too. I would think a few mm's in depth would likely do the trick.Surfingringo wrote:I probably will get the 2. Re: Spyderco MANTRA!!!!! Oh boy!
A curve would leave just a bit more metal at the tip too. If I take it flat from the tip to behind the opening hole it will likely leave the tip a bin thin even for me. I was planning to use a black sharpie to color in the metal to be removed then take a photos on a black cloth to help visualize what it will look like. Do that for a couple of mockups and get opinions from you guys.SpyderNut wrote:Hmm. A gentle curve would likely compliment that blade very well. Re: Spyderco MANTRA!!!!! Oh boy!
Yeah, that is going to be a great seller. I overlooked it in the catalog as I am burned out on flippers. I do not hate them, just over done for me. But, it does look a lot like a Delica, for certain. I may have to give this one a look over when they come out.Surfingringo wrote:Ummm, is it just me or does it look like they just made a ti flipper that looks amazingly "Delica-like"??? Look at the handle on that thing! Mmmhmmm. Ti flipper with Delica ergonomics and Taichung build quality. Oh yeah, and a better blade to handle ratio to boot. Oh, and lets make that in m4 while we're at it!! This model is going to be huge. You heard it here first!

Re: Spyderco MANTRA!!!!! Oh boy!
The fact that so many of these are rare makes it easy to justify buying, but hard to justify carrying. So, it's a double edged sword unless you buy >1 of everything, which I'm not rich enough to do.
I want that second HAP40 Delica but look at all the cool new Spydies dropping. So far I've resisted the PM2, and I wanted to wait for a special one for my first one, and it looks like those Jade ones are about to drop soon?
Also, discretion is the better part of valor even totally enabled like I am. It's good to keep some of that slush fund for those sweet deals like the Des Horn I got last night for $62. My first Taichung and I got the better of inflation. I just hope I don't regret not buying that second HAP40 Delica lol.

I think this is subliminal messaging; the Spyderco "Mantra" is to just buy them all!
Maybe the marketing is working better on me than you, lol.
Going back to Caly.

MSRP $279.95 x 60% = $167.97spyderwolf wrote:I saw the Mantra on pre-order on some sites going for 167$.You think the selling Price will be in the neighbourhood?
BHQ has them listed at $167.97 which is gonna be the MAP price when it drops. This will be the lowest price that you will see it advertised for and they should be readily available at that price from many dealers.

Re: Spyderco MANTRA!!!!! Oh boy!
For a street price a hair under 170 looks to be quite a seller. Ti frame lock flipper with m4 and a steel lock face insert will check a lot of boxes for a lot of folks. As many of you have mentioned the difficult question may be which model. I am leaning towards the 2 at the moment.
