Favorite small Spyderco

Post by Birdman21 »

Hey guys, new member, longtime Spydie owner. Was just curious what your favorite small EDC knife was. I'm in the market for something a little smaller than what I currently carry, and am leaning towards a dragonfly but would like some more input Thx!

I like a bunch of them. The Techno is a small and chunky knife that is quite capable and one of my favorites. The DF is incredible, as well and the Manbug, as a smaller option still, is really nice. Personally, the Techno is my favorite of the bunch, but I am really satisfied with each.

Thx! I'm really leaning towards the DF, do you like FRN or G10 scales better?

I was actually gonna get a ladybug, but it's lack of a pocket clip turned me off. Anyone have any experience with the Chicago or the Cat? thx

Dragonfly! My current EDC is an H1 DF in SE and an orange PE DF in VG-10. I LOVE them.
Bacon. Sometimes beer, but mostly bacon. I like Spydercos.

Couple of my favorites are the bradley air and the G10 manbug.
Happy to be part of this great forum and group of down to earth spyderco addicts, Thanks Sal and gang.

A couple that should be considered are the Lava and the Meerkat. Just depends personal taste though. None are without their respective pluses. Good luck and enjoy!

I like the Dragonfly, but the Chaparral always fit my hand better and I liked it better. I just recently picked up a Cat and I like the ergonomics better than the DFly on it too. I also much prefer the Techno...probably my favourite of the smaller "Full size" knives (I consider a knife to be full sized if I can get all 4 fingers on it). I like the Techno best, but it's a little on the thick side 4.5 mm stock compared to 2.5 mm on the DFly (I believe the Cat is about the same), and 2 mm on the Chaparral which makes it the sliciest option for sure. If sliciness is the main concern go with the Chaparral...if you do the occasional bit of light prying (No heavy prying should ever be done with a folder...fixed blade or a better tool for prying are much recommended) you might want to look more closely into the Techno.

thx for the suggestions! If your a rigger, you'll understand my dilemma. I'm a union millwright, and we do a lot of rigging, so I actually use my serrated Salt for a lot of stuff, but the serrations just don't lend themselves to everything. So if I have to carry a second knife, I need it to be small, but with the feel of a big knife cuz we're required to wear leather gloves. Thx!

Not sure if it counts, but the Dodo for sure. It has a small blade, but big handle. That's my favorite knife behind the Para 2. :)

Little big knife for most situations - D-fly.
However, with gloves as a requirement I would go Delica.
Dodo would be great if you can snag one, although closed it's right around 4-3/8" … not sure that qualifies as small.

The DF is really nice, especially the G10 version. However, the Chaparral and Cat are almost the same overall closed length (a little wider) but have longer blades. The Chaparral and Cat are excellent cutters, but the Cat is far and away cheaper. I have all the above and they are all good choices.

One of my favorite Small Spyderco folders was the old SPUR model. I don't know if this model falls into what you deem as a small Spyderco blade but I've loved the DODO model ever since I got my first one back in late 2003.

I guess I could add my Carbon Fiber CRICKET to the list as well.

I love the Cat, sounds great opening and a little stronger than my DF at least. Before getting a DF it was either the Cat or SB man bug in my pocket but they have both been kicked out by the DF SE H1.

For me, its a toss up between the bradley air and the leafstorm. Bradley air for "pocketed" carry and the leafstorm for clipped carry.
Domino 204P - Yojimbo 2 S90V - Yojimbo (blue and black)- Tuff- Gayle Bradley - Gayle Bradley Air - Leafstorm - Manix 2 S110V - Manix 2 S30V Black - PM2 S30V - Pacific Salt Black - Squarehead - Swick 3 - Swick 4

I'd have to say Dragonfly. I think at this point it has even surpassed the Ladybug as my favorite small folder. It's a lot of knife in a small package that weighs so little it's negligible. The ergos are great and it can be had in a pretty good variety of steels at this point including serrated, which is something that most all of the comparable knives of this size don't have.
