Let us know how the knife functions/performs after the modification. It sounds like what you said earlier about one man's closing is another man's opening problem may be the situation here.

I'm glad you ssay that about the stretch. I have a nishijin stretch too and it's at the top.as far as best feeling folders I've held along with the Manix XL. I've really been itching to put that SB blade to use.

Love me some SB steel, I have the matching Delica-Endura-Stretch. Real slicers there.

To be honest, I'm not sure SFO will do anything about the knife being a tough opener, unfortunately. I think some designs with certain materials are more prone to tightness issue than others and I've decided just to enjoy the SB Stretch and beat the heck out of it when I get it back.

It does sound like your particular knife is prone to stiffness and there may not be a quick fix.
Had the same issue with a Pac Salt and they replaced the knife. Like I said above the handles we're rubbing he black coating off the blade in quite a few spots. Replaced it with a satin blade and the replacement was worse.
I took it apart to see if I could loosen it up and couldn't get it back together.......another $25 and shipping.
It's coming back tomorrow and I hope it's at least a little better.

You can see there that is a h*ll of a spring
Even Spyderco can not outwit physics, every locking mechanism has it's own fundamental characteristics.
Locking mechanisms that require an additional design feature to keep the blade securely closed like the linerlock or the compressionlock with their detent balls have their own limitations.
The blade can not be too long and too heavy, otherwise you'd have to increase the tension of the liner so much that you can barely open the knife.

Not without reason you will hardly find any folding knives with a blade length > 4.5 inches that don't have some sort of modified lockback.
I assume that the Szabo folder is beyond the limit that any detent will hold the blade securely and that the additional spring is necessary for safety purposes.

The first knives with the compressionlock like the Lil' Temperance didn't have any sort of detent, the safety problem was technically solved differently. There was a channel cut out of the blade that rode against the lock bar.

Thanx for those pix! I'm still trying to figure them out and how that spring and bar works though.

After looking at those. It looks like the spring/bar doesn't do anything except the last 45 degrees of sweep when the blade returns. If that's true, mine has an issue, Because it is very tight all the way through the blade sweep. Feels like it is bound. That's why I tried adjusting the pivot and the blade goes wonky fast when you loosen the pivot any. I think I should send it back to the mother ship. The last 90 degrees of opening are VERY stiff and bound feeling.

I would send it back Les. You'll find yourself leaving that gorgeous blade in the drawer....and that would be a sin bro!!
Please let us know the outcome!
