hey sal! paramilitary 2 in...zdp-189?

hey sal & co!

a big thank you to you and to your team for all your hard work crafting interesting and useful knives -- and for mixing up older designs with newer steels!

i wanted to know if there was any chance at all we might see a paramilitary 2 in zdp-189. i bet you've been asked this before, but i'm pretty new to the forum, so would you let me -- and any other spydernewbs -- know your thoughts on this?

thanks!

I believe that there would be very little, if any, chance of this combo. Typically, Japanese steels such as VG10, ZDP-189, and Super Blue can only be used in Japanese models. The PM2 is made in the US, as you probably know.

I'm sure someone will cite the fact that the Autonomy is made in the US with a Japanese steel (H1), but I think it was a special case since Spyderco can't import autos. They could also move the PM2 to Japan, but I find that extremely unlikely. Thus, I would bet that we won't ever see a ZDP-189 PM2.

hmmm...that's a great point!

is there a crucible or carpenter steel equivalent to zdp-189?

S30V is pretty close to ZDP-189.

If you want something more "super" with higher wear resistance, a S110V model is coming out soon.

ZDP is a very unique steel. If you want great edge retention there are some options but nothing exactly like zdp. Take a look at the S110V Para2 that should be dropping soon. It is gonna be a regular production knife. :)

having used both, i'm a little surprised to see a positive comparison between s30v and zdp-189. but i am new to it all, so maybe that's just me!

currently debating a pre-order on the s110v para!

I'd be looking at the upcoming natural g10 M4 Para as well as the S110V. They should be very close in price too. May as well hey both :)

I do agree that they seem like different steels, I love how hard ZDP is.

People who do testing for high wear resistance rate ZDP pretty close to S30V.
