New Aqua Salt Serrated?

#1

Post by DansGunBlog »

Anyone here have the new Aqua Salt serrated yet?

How do you like it? i.e. feel in hand, how's the sheath retention, how well does it cut, etc?

Thanks!

Mines not new, but I don't imagine the addition of coating would change things appreciably.

I love it. Amazing balance and overall feel, and I think it looks phenomenal.

It feels awesome in hand, love the texturing on the flats but the curves are smooth for comfort. It could be a bit more hand filling, but it feels very good for a relatively slim knife. The front and rear quillons add to the secure feeling.

This sheath is the one by which I judge others. Perfect retention with no rattle. I would strap it to myself or a pack in any orientation with no worry, yet it pops free with the push of the thumb.

It cuts like you'd expect from a hollow ground SE spydie. I've used mine mostly for outdoor utility, and I live in a city, so it really doesn't see much use at all, unfortunately. I've zipped open a box here and there, but I usually use a folder for that. To be honest I just need to force myself to use it more. Sorry I can't comment more thoroughly in its cutting ability, but it is a lot of blade for the package! Often times I'm surprised how small certain fixed blades are when they come in, I was surprised how big this one was.

I agree with all of this. Grip is comfy, but could be a little bit more hand-filling, if I had to nit pick.

I sometimes wish it was FFG. It would have made it a much better slicer and food prepper, but the hollow grind is ok with H1, at least you get super corrosion resistance in return. Sheath is very good.

I have one of the new ones and the thing cuts like a chainsaw. Wondering why I didn't pick a few up when they were closing them out a few years ago.

Handle is very ergonomic, though not huge if you have bearpaws. Sheath retention is fantastic, no rattle and takes good effort to remove it. Overall I'm incredibly impressed with the package. My go to knife for kayak fishing. Did I say this thing can cut lol?

Brock, thanks for the side by side size comparison... the Military is imho an excellent general purpose size knife, nice to see this one be so similar in size.

@tventuto Thanks for the great detail. lol i hear you about using it more... my tools are well taken care of, tho they're all used, not living pampered in boxes. But some could definitely be used more. :-)

Thanks!

LOL I stopped reading at "chainsaw". :-)

How well does the sheath mount hold? i.e. does it get a solid grip on say a regular stiff belt?

Thanks!

The clip on the sheath is excellent. You can wear this knife in swimming trunks if you want.

I have two original aqua salts in serrated and in plain versions. I wear the serrated every day at sea as a rescue knife. It cuts through rope like butter. The sheath is secure, but I have adapted mine to have the g clip higher, so that the sheath sits lower. That way it sits on the belt better and is easier to sheath and unsheath. I have written to Spyderco about this. For my job I need my knife handle just below hip level as I wear oilskins.

I'm surprised to see so few reviews on the Aqua Salt... seems like it would be a great all-around knife for a variety of duties.

One of the knife magazines did a review on it when they were first released. I can't recall which company though.

I just completely "deforested" my "back yard" with my original uncoated SE Aqua salt. These things get quotes because I live in a city mostly devoid of greenery. Although, I was surprised to fill a whole outdoor trashcan with plant matter.
