Domino Love?

#1

Post by Liquid Cobra »

I don't own the original Domino as I'm not a humongous fan of the carbon fiber weave on it. It's purely an asthetics thing for me, I appreciate how well made the carbon fiber is. The Blue BBS Domino is one of my favourite knives though. I would love another version. Do you guys think that could ever happen? I know there the blue lightening strike is still available in some places and it is on my list.

A couple ideas...

-Black DLC version like they did with the Southard Folder (all black)
-Grey G10 with a fancy steel of your choosing (I think this would look great with the stonewashed titanium)
-Dark Blue G10 with S110V :)

Pretty much anything really. It's such a great design.
Most recently acquired: Military 2, Paramilitary 2 Tanto x2, YoJUMBO, Swayback, Siren, DLC Yojimbo 2, Native Chief, Shaman S90V, Para 3 LW, Ikuchi, UKPK, Smock, SUBVERT, Amalgam, Para 3 CTS-XHP, Kapara, Paramilitary 2 M390
Grail Paramilitary 2 M390 X 2! ACHIEVED!!

I would *love* to see the Dark Blue G10 / 110v treatment like the upcoming PM2. Not sure if that's something Sal wants to limit to Golden made models or if it's a general theme, but that combo might actually be able to kick the BBS version out of my pocket!

S90v or M4 with peel-ply CF like the Yojimbo sprint would look nice as well.

I agree, pretty much any new Domino combo would be very tempting.

I am a HUGE domino fan Cobra. I agree with you on the original "Domino" CF, it wasn't for me. I did get the Blue LSCF however and it is sharp looking. If you like your Blue BBS Domino I would highly recommend you get the Blue LSCF while they are still around, you will be very happy.

Other options (sprints) in materials I would like to see on this model (I like the CTS-XHP well enough that I don't necessarily need a new steel):

Gold LSCF like on the Szabo Folder
Possibly Ti on both sides? That would look sweet
I could definitely go for the black DLC treatment you mention also Cobra!

Dark blue G10 would be nice...or maybe Ti for both scales....I like carbon fiber also, but more like the Rubicon...not a big G10/ CF laminate fan. But definitely love the blue BBS version.

I would definitely have to agree with you. I have the smurf blue 204p domino and it steadily stays in my edc rotation. Its my favorite knife to play with when I'm sitting in traffic - it is so smooth and fast!

I too have passed on the two other domino offerings with cts-xhp just because I'm not super stoked on them for whatever reason.

Another sprint, with gray G-10 (or jade G-10??) would be really sweet and I would be all over it.
Domino 204P - Yojimbo 2 S90V - Yojimbo (blue and black)- Tuff- Gayle Bradley - Gayle Bradley Air - Leafstorm - Manix 2 S110V - Manix 2 S30V Black - PM2 S30V - Pacific Salt Black - Squarehead - Swick 3 - Swick 4

Thought I already posted, m4 would be sweet, I feel like the domino was meant to use tougher steels.

I think a lot of people would be interested in:

Grey G10 + K390
or
Peel-Ply Carbon Fiber + K390

I would like to try out this rumored steel that everyone seems to want. The Domino might make for an interesting platform?

That's funny how you chose today to make this thread! I actually just carried my BBS Domino today. The Para 2 has been my main EDC for a few weeks, but I missed my Domino. I'd love one with solid CF, and maybe S90v or S110v.

Those are some great suggestions GS. Interesting that I'm not alone on my thoughts about standard CF scale.

Matt, I was carrying mine today as well. It got me thinking I need more Domino's in my collection!

Hudson, I've come close to getting the CF blue exclusive so many times. But everytime I've got money to spend I pick a different model.

Cobra,

I was in the same boat. After dropping the full-boat coin for the BBS Domino straight from the source (ouch!), I was reluctant to pay for another one. I was patient, though, and found one for a great deal on BF. I know you're in Canada and it makes it that much harder and more $$, I guarantee it's worth it. This is one of the best models Spyderco has ever put out IMHO, and I'd love to see new ones!

Here's mine to tempt you :)

Beautiful pic! I always held back from this because I haven't seen one in person and dont want to spend 2 bills on something I regret. I might just pull the trigger on this one while they are still available commercially. Sal thanks you for my cash.
Bacon. Sometimes beer, but mostly bacon. I like Spydercos.

Decided to call it a day by taking my BBS version and made it uniquely my own:

The Domino could have been a splendid compact flipper but the design is...flawed.Too bad.The grip behind the choil is not confortable(as in Manix) and the thumb hole is not in the right position.Of course the F&F is exquisite, as expected from a Taichung folder.Eric did a great job when he designed Manix and Dodo but this time....

I find it pretty easy to use the thumb hole, especially middle finger flick.

I couldn't disagree more. I find the knife extremely comfortable in my hand, no matter which grip I chose. The blade opens very easily using the thumb hole. Aesthetically it does look like the hole should be closer to the cut out in the handle, but it functions just fine as is. It is probably just one of those things where a knife works in one persons hand where it doesn't in someone else's.

Not better, just different.

I would definitely go for it. There are several knives I really want in the sub $200 range, but this was one I knew I couldn't get later. The blue LSCF just beautifully exectuted and is one of the best looking scale materials I've seen (I just wish it wasn't a laminate but for ~$170 I can't complain). It's hard to photograph and get the twill to show up but I tried my best. It really has nice walk and talk to it.

What about some wood. A Domino with some nice Desert Ironwood or Cocobolo, yes please.
On my radar: 110V Military, Police 4 and some sweet Rex 45 Military action.

Newest Spydies: S90v Ti Military, Pacific Salt and a special Kiwi.

I hear those are nice! ;) Here's my desert ironwood one by Steve Ketchen. My 204P Domino has a coarse black G10 scale on it (same texture as Southard scale). I think both really dress the knife up much more, the coarse G10 should be standard for the base model IMHO. Cheers, Radioactive :)
