Hmm, I missed that part about the makeup. I guess it is a good question ABX2011; if the chemistry was out of spec for ZDP-189? Or was the chemistry fine, but the steel structure was wrong? Just because they are not repairable or re-treatable does not mean the steel is not ZDP-189. Bad grain size, or ...

I wish more info had been provided re the ZDP mule. Are we to assume that the chemistry is off on these blades so that it's not really correct to call them ZDP-189? It's some mystery steel that resulted from an error?

How about the stainless Rescue Jr? Or was it called a Mariner Jr? I think I've seen one in the last 2 years on ebay. By comparison, the WTC, 2 screw workers, brass lined Co-Pilots, even red D1s and E1s, come up for sale more often.

Bidders going over the NIB price (from stores on Ebay) on current models is one thing. Bidding more than MSRP is absolutely nuts, and it does happen.

When I think of a dedicated Backpacking only knife, the Remote Release springs to mind. If there were a H1 remote release, combo edge, in orange or yellow, I think you'd have it nearly perfect.

You've got me. I'm stumped too. I just posted the same basic thread over at bladeforums, then I came here and found this thread. I'm sure we'll have answers in the morning.

For me, the dent makes closing EASIER. When I go back to a D2 or 3, or an older rescue, I find I miss the dent. My fingers now 'look' for the dent subconsciously and when it isn't there, I notice that it's gone. After a few days back to a newer model, the dent becomes oblivious to me again.
