Re: Phosphor Bronze washers: Theory and Innovation?

Big washers support the blade better but if any of the bearing faces are not quite smooth, flat or parallel, it will be harder to tune out blade play and/or there will be more friction .

So big washers are great if tolerances are good, smaller washers are more forgiving if things are not quite ...

Re: Sharpmaker question

Medium and fine then a strop is plenty for a user.

If I need something more aggressive I smear some diamond lapping paste on the medium rods - works a treat and much cheaper than the CBN rods

Does anyone have pictures to post of the Alien on which this is based?

I don't want to say too much about the Spyderco version other than it will not be exactly like the one at the show (or my own version) and will probably have more of a ...

Re: Spydie Chef, clip infill screw

I assume it is a button head you want not a pan head - what is the head diameter?

A quick google https://www.accu.co.uk/socket-button-screws/155048-SSB-M3-4-A2-BL

Its a hex socket and 4mm thread length so might be too long still.

If you would be happy with silver stainless you will have a lot ...

Re: Aluminium Handles?

Grade 5 titanium is a natural spring material and this is a big advantage over Aluminium where the scales form a springy part of the lock mechanism ie framelocks and PITS. Aluminium scales used in these types of knives would have a limited life span.

Another big advantage of Ti over Aluminium is ...

Interesting. A bit difficult for me to visualize what you are explaining... about reversing the direction.

I too am really looking forward to possible photos of this proto, but then again I am not getting my hopes up if it will be one that made the cut for Mr. Blondes photo thread or not... it ...

Re: New Lock/Knife by PITS designer Mike Read

At the very beginning the design started out with the lock bar locking as it dropped down, with the lock release working the same as a back-lock.

Having experience of back-locks letting go when you pull up on the knife, it seemed like a good idea to reverse the lock direction to prevent this ...

Re: New Lock/Knife by PITS designer Mike Read

Is this thread OK Mods? I am not sure how acceptable it is to discuss non Spyderco knives on this forum. Please let me know if it goes too far?

I have just started taking orders for customs and I don't know if the design will ever be available in any other form. I did spend a bit of time looking at ...

Re: New Lock/Knife by PITS designer Mike Read
Sal had mentioned about a new lock by Mike Read in the PITS thread, and how it was based on, or inspired by old "art", and a now expired patent (if I read him correctly).
The lock is a completely original design, not copied from or inspired by any previous design. I am ...

Re: New Lock/Knife by PITS designer Mike Read

In answer to a few comments:

You cannot close the blade on your finger while it is in the hole, After you have depressed the lock bar to release the lock, the lock bar has to travel up past the window before the blade can, so your finger has to be removed before the blade will close.

You could ...

Re: Question about PITS

The mechanism is similar to a slip joint in that the spring pushes down on the tang relatively hard. This will make the knife harder to open than most lockers but I personally don't find them to be overly stiff. Maybe yours needs to free up a little if it is new.

The clip does have some give in it ...

Gorgeous blade! Feels great as well, I handled it last year at the Amsterdam meet and have been having a hard time trying to get it off my mind. ;)
Maybe I should start planning a trip to the UK so I have a better excuse.. :D

Re: Question about PITS

Most of my knives have been made from RWL 34 and I have little experience of N690 so I cannot give you a comparison based on my own experience. Spyderco have chosen this steel and I believe it is very similar to VG10 which I believe is a great steel for an EDC. So I will be carrying my production ...

Re: Question about PITS

First photo shows how the blade tang/finger guard sweeps the area where your finger would normally be. When using the knife your finger is right up behind and touching the tang/finger guard so you are aware of exactly what the blade is doing, similar to a choil.

Re: Question about PITS

I see that the guard extends through the handle to the other side and was wondering if this can be used as a flipper to open the knife as well or does the spring mechanism clamp down too hard to allow this opening method......even if you give it a good wrist flick as your push down on the guard ...

Well spotted Manixfan. I wasn't trying to hide- honest

I am pleased you like the design. if you do buy one you will find that you don't necessarily need a locker to handle normal everyday tasks.

Re: Question about PITS

It doesnt swing free, there is some friction like a typical back lock.

By no spring bias I mean the blade will stay still wherever you put it, except when it clicks into the open or closed positions. Unlike some slippy's which will always spring to the open, closed or half stop position. This ...
