Spydie Chef, clip infill screw

#1

Post by Knocker »

I am removing the pocket clip from my new Spydie Chef, keeping it in a slip case. Obviously I can’t use the original clip screw to infill the hole left as it is now too long without the clip being installed. UK based, finding it hard to source a new fill in screw. Can anyone tell me the screw size and type please? Plus any UK suppliers. (Black CQI screws). Help greatly appreciated.

Hi Knocker,

Welcome to our forum.

I would suggest grinding the screw shorter.

Check the pivot screws. If they shorter you might be able to swap them.

Grinding down a screw of this size would be nigh on impossible for me to do. I really don’t want to start removing the pivot screw, as in theory this would invalidate the warranty! Surely someone out their knows the screw size I need and where I could buy it.

I don't currently have a spydichef to confirm, but I'm almost positive it's an M3.

I could send you a titanium one, if you'd like.

Edit: I just checked all of my Taichung models with wire clips, and they're all M3.

I assume it is a button head you want not a pan head - what is the head diameter?

A quick google https://www.accu.co.uk/socket-button-sc ... M3-4-A2-BL

Its a hex socket and 4mm thread length so might be too long still.

If you would be happy with silver stainless you will have a lot more options.

If you cannot find any shorter order a few and have them delivered to me, I can shorten a couple and post them on.

Why don’t Spyderco just list the screws used in making their knives, what’s to hide? As said I am UK based and to try and get one clip infill screw I have to depend on 2 kind gents in America to send me screws that might be the right size. All I want to know is, what is the right size and type of screw, I can then source this type and buy it in the UK, should it be this hard?

Thanks for the M3 confirmation Giygas and thanks for the accu.co.uk ref mekidear. Ordered a couple of M3x3mm T10 Torx Button screws, black stainless steel(A2) that’s the smallest M3 size I can find in the UK. Thread fits great but still a bit long. Using a pair of pliers, screw in the wire cutter part, slipped into a plastic bag then hit with a lump hammer, the pliers cut a millimetre off the end of the screw. Drilled a 2.5mm hole in a plastic packer and screwed the cut screw into the packer. I then run the packer with screw inserted over a fine metal file to clean the end of the screw up. Carefully inserted the screw into the pocket clip hole and it went in the scale thread perfectly. Except for it been a T10 you would never know. Still not sure why American suppliers are reluctant to post out to the Uk.

I understand your frustration and congratulate you on resolving the problem which you created.

You can determine this size of screws by measuring and counting threads. It's not rocket science. A set of calipers and some google searches will tell you how to do this. It's a useful skill to have.

I don't think that Spyderco is hiding anything. You have the knife which has screws which you can measure. It sounds odd to suggest hiding something when the knife containing the screws is in the palm of your hand?

I'm really not trying to be hostile or rude or anything, just practical.

All the best,

I have the one knife, a Spydie Chef, I believe now made for several years. It would be practicable for the manufacturer to know what parts are being used in the construction of a singular product made over several years, if not for its own inventory management at least. Yes I agree I caused my dilemma, shame on me for not being able to know the screw size, I guess that’s why I asked the forum. Yes if I wanted the original screw to protrude 3 mm above the surface I could have spent as much time trying to source the correct size washer. Thanks for your wise words.
