I think I do understand the dilemma, lamorak. I don't have 50, but do own several Spydies, and no longer own some that I didn't like. Some of the ones I have are my most frequently carried knives. By and large, they are well-constructed, very funtional, quite ergonomic, beautifully finished for ...

Yeah... this is one those desired fixes that don't normally end well. You could attempt to tighten the pivot, which is essentially a "precision rivet" by crushing it in a vice or using a hammer and anvil. You could attempt to heat and bend the handle to center it to the blade. But either of these ...

Many good points and varying perspectives have been expressed already, and from the diversity of perspectives, it should be obvious by now that the guys who read and respond on this forum have widely different tastes and expectations regarding the knives about which they're so passionate. My best ...

Fondle it... Fondle it... And fondle it some more :) . It'll get smoother the more you use it. But as stated above, the stop pin is your "sweetness" adjustment. I suggest taking the screws out of the stop pin, applying new blue loctite, reassembling very loosely, adjusting the pivot as desired, and ...

I know it's a bit intimidating to start grinding away on your $200 knife, but the work on the liner lock is really not that hard. First, mark the liner with a pencil, following the arc of the choil to give yourself a guide for the curve you want, keeping in mind where you want to stop. Next ...

Vallotton Surprise!

I recently received my long-anticipated Spyderco Vallotton folder. I had watched videos, read reviews, and gotten over my feeling of oddness about the thumb studs / blade stops. I finally decide I wanted one, waited for the right deal ($179 on ebay, shipped), and bought it. I have to say though ...

I laughed as I read the agonizing question and the very well-thought-out answers. But as Jet B says... the only real answer is... BOTH :)

Of course, they could make a budget GB, with VG-10 steel, bi-directionally textured FRN scales, maybe in some cool colors, and sell it for around $80. But wait... wouldn't that be a Stretch? :)

Wow... Who would have thought 2 or three years ago that we would all come to regard S30V as the old tried-and-true, unremarkable, "old pair of blue jeans" steel? When it first became available, I avoided it. You know the logic... "Why do I need to pay all that money when AUS-8 and VG-10 work just ...

I agree with DeathBySnooSnoo... I've had mine since Christmas (what a wife I have :) ), and I have to say the durability of the CF is rather amazing. I've EDC'd it about half the time I've owned it, carved an entire Pinewood Derby car with it, and generally worked the heck out of it, and the CF ...

I have no experience with ZDP189 steel, but... I'm wondering if because its extreme hardness you might be getting some micro-chipping at the edge, perhaps caused by drawing the knife back from the sharpening medium. I know certain steels must be sharpened "forward," or like you are shaving the stone ...

Just do it! I would stick with the satin blade versions though... that is of course unless you're a covert operator who works mostly at night and don't want your opponents to see the reflection off your blade... lol. The satin blades just slice better, and corrosion is not an issue with S30V.

I guess I have to agree with most who have posted... I own 2 Golden, CO, USA Spydies, and 2 Taichung knives. My US-made blades are a Military and Paramilitary 2. The Taiwan knives are a Gayle Bradley and a Vallotton. Here's my 2 cents: The fit and finish on the Taichung knives are not so much better ...
