Dream-knife ...

Hello Guys;

I was just trying to think up the perfect knife - hypothetical exercise. After a few iterations, this is what I came up with:

Model: Spyderco Starmate (like the older one in 440V).
Liners : Like the gayle bradley (steel, thichness, fit 'n finish ...)
Scales: Lightning strike Carbon ...

Well actually; I'm somewhat dissapointed in ZDP189. I was hoping that it would keep that scarp sharp edge longer, turns out it doesn't. It keeps a lousy edge next to forever, but i don't like lousy edges... Probably because I put a really scary sharp razor edge on all of my knives. (slack belt with ...

Blade steel; CPM-M4 vs VG-10 vs S30V vs ZDP-189

Hello guys,

I have a question.

Having tested a Stretch and endura in ZDP189, a military and a paramilitary in S30V, an endura in VG-10 and a Gayle bradley in CPM-M4, I get confusing results.

When I freshly sharpen the blades; all have this scary sharp razor feeling, and pop hairs easily off my ...

That is a fairly amusing statistic which shows just how extreme some cutlery steels can get when S30V is judged to have high grindability, you obviously have quite a nice collection of high alloy steels. How do you classify something like 420HC in comparison?

Really nice details, really nice ...

Interesting note/result. I have seen a lot of knives where this seems to be an issue over the years, from just about every maker.

Decarburization is simply the exposed steel getting too hot and having too much carbon and loosing carbon to the surrounding air and scale. When hardening stuff; I've ...

Well; I think I made something not clear. The polishing part was about the flats; the whole blade and not the edge. The edge is a straight mirror. An I try to avoid secondairy bevels, I usually sharpen on a loose trizact belt, which makes a gorgeous convex edge, and then I polish that.

I test on ...

CPM-M4 in the Gayle Bradley

Hello Guys;

While trying to figure out how to best sharpen the Gayle Bradley, I've found some things that are probably good info for more people.

1. Altough mine is JJ; and there has been some talk of bad hardening in that batch; I think the hardening is done Good; maybe some blades that have ...

S30V can be made tough enough for a scandi grind. say at HRC 57. The S30V from spyderco is routinely harder (HRC 59-60), and that will get chippy in scandi grinds.

If you want to have a superfine hair-poppin' laser scalpel; get something in CPM-M4 and make a scandi grind in that... you can even ...

I have a few millies; and every time I pick one up, I'm impressed by the size-weight ratio, and when I cut stuff with it, it never seem to want to stop.
You want to cut something; and you want to cut it at once. The flat ground knife; rock-solid handle, it's a great kitchen knife, it's a great ...

Hello Guys;

I'm kinda new to this forum, but I've been into knives for 10 years about, I've made high-end swords and performance hunting / working knives.

As for the Gayle Bradley, I obtained one excactly for the CPM-M4, to see what this steel does, how it works, if it really is that good. I ...

Mine is JJ, and I can say that I did find evidence of surface decarb. In fact, I can scratch glass with some sections of the edge (I know, this rolls like **** and is murder to the edge). It was puzzeling that some sections cut into the glass, while others simply deformed and didn't touch the glass ...
