Re: What are these marks on the inside of the scales?

Injection molded parts are numbered so they can be more easily identified if found defective rather than checking the entire mold to find the errant part as most molds make multiple parts at a time.

Spyderco also used to use a diamond stylus pantograph (hand and CNC operated) but the industry in general has b...

Re: History of FRN for Spyderco?

The original LSTs were Gerber's FSI and Classic patterns with linerless Micarta handles, however, when Blackie designed the injection molded handle model (in less than an hour), they were originally Dupont Rynite (an injection molded polyester, Polyethylene terephthalate or PET) before switching to ...

Hi Tom: I second everything you say and have been saying since 2012. That’s dedication! And dedication is what Spyderco has been about for the last 48+ years. Not only pushing the envelope but creating their own and then breaking through, improving upon their own innovations, and moving industry sta...

Re: Old Spyderco Gyuto

Looks like the 300mm Gyotos were made in 1996: https://catalogs.z6.web.core.windows.net/ironstone1996.pdf I believe that MBS-26 is Masahiro's proprietary steel and used exclusively by them. On paper it looks rather unremarkable, however, with their specials heat treatment, it preforms superbly. This...

Re: Black Linen Micarta instead CF/G-10 please

Certain models might be affected by Micarta’s higher coefficient of expansion and water absorption. Micarta: - Water Absorption, 24 hrs (%) 2.0 (Paper), 2.5 (Canvas) 1.8 (Linen) - Coefficient of Linear Thermal Expansion (x 10-5 in./in./°F) – Lengthwise: 0.80 (Paper), 1.20 (Canvas) 1.10 (Linen) - Cro...

Re: Corrosion and Edge Retention

As I recall, Gerber Mark II daggers were L6 and hand ground or at least glazed lengthwise to the edge, sort of Scandi ground as thick cruciform daggers blade angles are not much more than 40°inclusive, so this was an "out of the box" solution to a grinding/finishing/sharpening problem. I h...

Re: Corrosion and Edge Retention

When David Murphy started making knives for Gerber in the late 1930s, I believe he recycled used M2 High Speed Tool Steel power hacksaw blades that he ground to shape and had chrome plated. They had cast aluminum handles that in time, long after Gerber took over production in their own factory after...
