We have a "coffee table" with a glass surface surrounded by a wood framework. My wife suggested that I add a wood 'shelf' under the glass. -Pete

Wow, I'm glad everyone is enjoying the video! I'm sure everyone noticed the tourguide-girl's awesome Farrah Fawcett hairdo! ;-) The other lady is my wife. My Japanese was pretty limited, so I didn't do much talking that day. I'm guessing that Mr. Sakai was intrigued by us because I was an American ...

swordsmith Magoroku Kanemoto in Seki, 1989

As mentioned in another thread, my wife and I got to meet this swordsmith in Seki back in 1989. Video links below. When we arrived, he was just working on processing some raw iron. He operates the bellows with one hand, and the tongs with the other. Note the "modern" power hammer - more ...

G. Sakai factory in Seki in 1989

In May 1989, my wife and I visited Seki and the G. Sakai factory store. While looking around, a fellow started talking to us about knives and such - turned out he was Sumio Sakai. He told an employee to show us around the factory. Later, I told him that I was interested in Japanese swords. He made a ...

last year's sale

Some examples from last year (I didn't get there until after noon):
A bunch of Chicago's with sloppy shaping on the scales for $10 each. I got one, wish I had got 3...
Byrdwrench for $15. You had to do a bit of testing to find two halves that worked well together, but I got two that are both fine.
A ...

Yes, "Spyderco Way" is the official name of the street.

I got there late today (about 1:30), so the selection was not so good, but no waiting in line, either.

Hi guys, isn´t this type of laminated blade commonly known as San mai? Jose

Yes. In Japanese, "san mai" literally means "3 layers". It can actually refer to anything that has 'flat pieces' or 'layers', such as a birthday cake, or 3 pieces of paper, etc. I mention this because us Westerners may ...

Hi Daniel,
Nice to meet you. I have a few J-swords, and I used to be rather serious at it, but they've just been locked away for years now.
Speaking of Japanese-style cutlery: I'd like to see Spyderco do a simple "kiridashi" style knife - 1-piece, carbon steel, but with some sort of Spyderco touch ...

LOL :p
The 'line' you see is the lamination line sometimes refered to as the 'hamon'. /cutlery/Spyderco/Caly%20III/DSC_4204.jpg[/IMG]

Just a nit: A lamination line and a hamon are rather different things. The latter is produced in a Japanese sword by the special heat-treating process ("yaki-ire ...

Toad310 is correct. There has to be specifications documented. However, it's possible that Spyderco HQ defines the fasteners based on the required strength and size characteristics, and may leave some leeway on the exact threads and other dimensions. In this case, the overseas maker (CM = Contract ...

Try this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Work_hardening

Bend an iron nail back and forth. It bends nicely at first, but soon becomes brittle, and snaps off. This is due to "work-hardening". After it starts getting hard, if you heat it to a high enough temperature (perhaps a dull red?), then let it ...

OK, I'm over 3 years late on this thread...
About 20 years ago, my wife and I visited the "G. Sakai" factory shown in the picture a few posts back. While looking around in the small showroom, a man came out from the back and started asking me things like what type of knife I liked, etc. Turned out ...

My vote:
No liners.
No options that would raise the price, EXCEPT for the clip. In a knife this size, the flexibility of the clip is a critical feature.

Thanks for letting us weigh in!

Hamaguri blade grind

Other than the Lum Tanto, are there any models that use the "hamaguri" grind?

I'm interested because in years past I was a collector of Japanese swords - all "Nihonto" that I can think of have this type of edge, except for kogatana (a.k.a. kozuka). It is a natural type of edge, given that all the ...

Hi All,
Today I got a reply back from a nice lady in Golden (I was in the showroom the other day, snooping around).
Here's a synopsis of what she said (I sent pictures):

Q: What about the serial #? Why on the body instead of the blade?
A: They were all serial numbered which is the #428. We had a ...

One more observation, for those that might care:
The side-panel without the clip (the ruler side) is slightly thinner material, compared to the blade and and the other side-panel.
If this is interesting/important, I can measure it with a micrometer.

prototype Diver?

Hi All,
Just joined the forums, but I've owned Spyderco products since the late 80's. I think I have a dozen or so models.

I looking for any comments on this:

- Diver 2001R-SER, with original box. I bought it new in about 1988. I think it was my 2nd or 3rd.
- It is marked "#428" on the body (not ...
