Re: What did this poor Jess Horn do to deserve this??

Oh, the humanity! I see knives like this on EBAY sometimes and they have high prices listed and I feel like the seller should be paying someone to take it off their hands. I had a Buck knife that I used when I was working as a Diver and I abused the crap out of it for over 20 years, sharpening it on ...

Re: Autonomy Spring Replacement Kit Applicability

Today I finally got around to opening up my replacement kit and replacing the spring in my Autonomy. I was watching and waiting for the Spyderco Autonomy spring kit for a while and when they finally came up for sale I waited around too long and did not get the color kit for the orange handle knife ...

that's the opposite of my experience. But if you're not interested in comparing for yourself I guess there's not much else to say.
I appreciate the offer but I don't think it is anything I am interested in.

Re: H-1 steel

I am retired now and don't have any hard use for knives now so I don't need to compare. But, in my experience with a wide variety of materials a polished edge cuts better with less effort and lasts longer. I also worked for a company called ASKO, American Shear Knife as the plant Engineer. We made ...

Re: Autonomy 1 Kit

I recently got two of them. I am not sure how many they put together or how often but they do come out. I went SCUBAA diving with mine on a regular basis so I figured it might be a good idea to change out the spring.

Re: H-1 steel

I don't own that knife any longer. When I left that diving job for the submarine company I gave it to one of the other divers because he was always amazed at how well it cut the materials we worked with. I used it to cut heavy rope called Blue Steel shown in one of these pictures, up to 1/2" thick ...

Re: H-1 steel

I don't think there is significant noticeable increase in hardness / edge retention in H1 with frequent hard use. I had a Pacific Salt model That I used day in and day out for close to 5 years working in an ocean environment cutting some pretty tough materials and I had to sharpen it on a very ...

Re: Spyderco Custom Shop

Instead of H1 I would find a custom maker using Magnacut. It is the popular steel of the week lately and everyone seems to be using it. It supposedly has the corrosion resistance as well as better toughness and edge retention than H1. I found under hard, frequent use that H1 had poor edge retention.

Re: Batoning Enuff 2?

I was a Boy Scout and later a Boy Scout leader while my 2 Sons were in the program (both are Eagle Scouts) for a combined time of over 20 years. We had a lot of time camping, hiking, climbing, caving etc. and I never had the need to baton any wood. I tried it a couple of times but I used a Cold ...

If you are serious you need to decide soon because I am pretty sure they are discontinued and will probably get hard to find.

Didn't realize they were discontinued - thanks for the heads up.

Re: Syderco Subvert - very well made and impressive.

Cool thread and I'm very stoked to see so many more detailed pictures with varied angles, not to mention the reflections from Subvert owners. I've been attracted to the model ever since I got back into Spyderco knives (2023), but despite many sale/discount opportunities something has kept me from ...

If you have a steel production facility and you are going to produce specialty small batch steels you will probably want to roll them as well to ...

National knifes. Subvert CF. $ 336 after login.
That is an awesome price. Let us know if it is legit. Not trying to cast dispersions on that seller, but I have not heard of them and with a price that low I would need to see that deal happen to believe it.

Well… what exactly is this knife for then? Nobody is carrying a $350 knife for hard use. I don’t get it.

It’s a cool blade shape. Seems like it would be useful if it were a more normal price and wasn’t quite so thick for thickness’ sake.

Re: Syderco Subvert - very well made and impressive.

So, after writing this and answering questions I decided to carry the CF handle Subvert for a while and see how I like it. I traded out my XM-24 for this beast. A couple of you had questions on the handle thickness so here are the numbers. At the tail end the handle is about 0.805" (just the CF part ...

Re: Syderco Subvert - very well made and impressive.

Vjb,

Great write up and on two big knives I have honestly trolled around hard because of how big a knife they are.

I didn't think both of these knives had the 20CV steel, that is cool though. I thought the orange G10 was S30v but i could be wrong. The one question I have never known for sure is ...
