Re: Stable edge steels (NOT TOUGHNESS)

Wow guys, thanks for the feedback! I didn’t expect it to be so fast, encouraging, and well-informed. Leave it to the Spyderco forum crowd to bring the steel enthusiasm!

Some things I think should be noted that I forgot to include originally:

All knives were sharpened to 17dps

Re: Stable edge steels (NOT TOUGHNESS)

A viewer of mine watched a recent video and suggested I post it to this thread.

The testing is admittedly on the imprecise side of things, as it is impossible to eliminate bias caused by geometry, heat-treatment, and hand movements - but I found the results interesting in terms of stable edge ...

Welcome to the forum.

Looking forward to your findings.
Thank you! I've just completed filming on my research on different kinds of stones, and am now working on some steel variations - will keep you guys posted!

Re: Sharpening Dual Grit Edges

Hey Gabe,
Welcome to the forum! I've enjoyed many of your videos; and, Thank You for taking the time and sharing.
I've oft wondered if your "dual grit edge" is the just the "fine side" being a good de-burrer of the coarse side burr, thereby getting closer to, or better achieving, a burr-free apex ...

Re: Sharpening Dual Grit Edges

A) It's an interesting concept, but what immediately comes to mind for me is that I touch my knives up on a pocket hone a lot, and it seems like it would undo the dual finish...

B) It seems to me that the primary mechanism of improvement here is a secondary burr created at the end of the first ...

Cool, nice to have you aboard! I might have to try this general technique sometime.
Let me know how it goes if you do - or if you run into any problems. My video tutorial is now in a link just after your comment, so you can check it out if that's helpful!

Cheers,

Re: Sharpening Dual Grit Edges

Good to have you here Gabe! I have dabbled in the dual grit edge myself in the earliest days of your YouTube channel. I found it impressive, but I haven’t kept up with it due to laziness when it comes to sharpening lately. One stone and a couple swipes on the stop for me lately. I might need to ...

Re: Sharpening Dual Grit Edges

Hey, cool to see you having joined the forum to share some of your knowledge :-)

Personally I suck at sharpening, gave dual grit only one try using a sharpmaker and a serrated knife without any success. So still getting my skills up with conventional methods.

Thanks for the response!

IMO no ...

Sharpening Dual Grit Edges

Hey Spyderco community, my name is Gabe (YouTube Creator from The Home Slice channel) - and I have popularized a style of sharpening called "Dual Grit". I am brand new to the Forum scene, so feel free to notify me how things work here if I am out of normal protocol at any point.

Hey JoviAl, Gabe here from The Home Slice - It's so cool to hear about your results from the Sharpmaker - Sal & the team recently sent me a Sharpmaker and I have thought about doing a dual grit edge with it. Looks like you beat me to it, and with good results. I also switch sides to avoid ...

Re: How to sharpen Magnacut for max edge retention, dual grit sharpening

Hey guys, not sure if all of you would have caught it, but I did an in-depth description of the sharpening protocol I used for this specific Mule sent to Pete. I publicize all my findings so that other people can benefit from them. This is the video tutorial for the style of edge I sent to Pete on ...

I know I bring it up all the time but you guys should really check out Scienceofsharp.com. There's an article about Pete's dual grit sharpening. It seems to create an ideal geometry for cutting sisal rope.

Re: How to sharpen Magnacut for max edge retention, dual grit sharpening

It shows us that we can alter our edges to the optimal for that steel or heat treat. The sharpener did an amazing job which brought out the best in the steel. A microscopic image of the edge would be quite beneficial so that we could replicate the results. I do a mirror polish or a rougher grit ...

Re: Your Magna Cut Mule performance.

Sounds like some kind of neat trick with styling the solution with the carbides into some kind of "super-edge", and that maybe it works better with high toughness steels because it's like a "micro-edge stability thing". Could be very interesting for other high-toughness steels like LC200N, AEB-L ...

Re: Your Magna Cut Mule performance.

I’ve been trying this dual grit edge trailing sharpening method on my Magnacut mule for about a month now and regardless of how long it will cut for (I still have to sharpen every second or third day, but that’s up from the end of pretty much every day of work) it is really swift to do. Maybe 15 ...

Re: Sharpmaker enough for M4 or K390?

update. that guy in AUS keeps cutting his saisal rope and Magnacut is biting at the heels of S90V for edge retention, far ahead of M4, which is far ahead of Cruwear, all using Mules.

Magnacut's genuinely freakish advance, it seems to me, is its stainlessness in relation to those other two ...
