I have to admit that I would love a 12 inch salt-series machete, but maybe separate from the Whale Rescue Blade. I’d buy both.

I’d love to get your input on how you think this knife would work as a machete vs a plain edge.

I've used this one a fair amount puttering around in the garden and woods, and it works really well as a sort of hand scythe. It cuts through softer plants and vegetation like butter. But it has a tendency to get snagged on harder stuff (unless it's used as a saw, in which case it works well), and doesn't really have the right geometry for chopping like a machete does. So to me it's more of a scythe saw combo. It would be cool to try one out in plain edge as well, but it would likely not have that great aggressiveness the serrations give it.

Thanks. So the perfect “machete” would have the serrated “Scythe” on the concave side and plain edge on the convex side for the traditional chopping strokes. So we need a bi directional machete handle and some magic fairies to whisper in Sals ear as he sleeps.

Interesting video. I wouldn’t trust that tubular nylon as a sheath, in a fall that blade could cut right through it and into the person who fell. A wooden or kydex scabbard seems safer.

Thanks for that observation. I have a backpacking “cutting board” as a liner inside the tubular nylon, folded where the blade is.

I bought a sheet of kydex to make a sheath but it did not work out.

To this day, I carry the Aqua Salt on our nightly dog walks.

Cool video! I’ve never used those flexible cutting boards, but that seems like a good idea. I used to live where cougars roam, in the Colorado mountains.

Serrated machete.. wow, this thread took off in a totally different direction than I anticipated :D
But then again, it's the Spyderco forums so I should have expected as much. I think maybe the creativity exceeded the market potential on this one :D

Darn Dao is the closest I know of, but that was of very limited production, and the Schempp Rock was next closest I know of.

A Whale Rescue Blade (WRB) with a plainedge on on what is now the spine would indeed be neat,
That said, I doubt there is a large enough market to warrant such an odd knife, even less of one than a WRB

One of the newer Salt steels would of course be a given for a new WRB run; the one with the most toughness, of course.

It just occurred to me that a salt-series machete might be a great place for a combo edge, similar to the proportions on the Catcherman. A long plain edge for chopping and a short bit of serrations on a nice thin 12 inch LC200N machete would be really handy.

This would be also the optimal serrated sickle outperforming and complementing the Tasman Salt SE in those delicate spots where I can't use a weedwhacker without a danger of damaging useful plants.. ideally perhaps with kama style handles?

Proof positive that a serrated “Rescue” blade can protect you from soccer balls. Maybe a few goalies could use these thanks for that video. Proof positive that this concept can be useful in real life but seriously, thank you. I think a folding whale rescue blade may be the bees knees. Good for packing for outdoor activities. Kinda like a “Super Civillian” or Civillian XXXL. That thing could clear a camp site real quick from anything 1/2” or under. Put a spydie hole on the folding Rescue so I can Spydie flick it please. Might need to be a slip joint with a screw in security pin. I’ll take a fixed one too because that would be the easiest to R&D. If you put a 1/4” thread system in it you could add on as many sections of handle as you need to cut whales free or add the ubiquitous broom handle thread and add it to any pole system. Add a female broom thread to the base and you are in business.

Not a machete but a couple large choppers. The Forester has been unavailable for ages and the Darn Dao was prohibitively expensive. The Province, Respect and Rock Salt are really just large knives and not full on choppers. I would love to see Spyderco make another large chopper but I have to be honest and say that it is gonna be too expensive for how I treat knives like that.

The Camp10 is a great tool at a great price even if the handle isn’t my favorite. I personally love the BK9 and have been beating one senseless for years now.
