Well… suddenly I’m not so excited to get the knife in the mail today. I’ll have to check it out but the fact that it was listed as a hollow and it’s a flat saber instead is a turn off.

Re: Cru Wear Centofante III !
With this being such a low hollow grind I'm not sure it makes much difference.

That gap was so tiny it was hard to get a picture of. I believe the Centofante 3's hollow grind is a tad bit taller though so it'll be more prominent on those.
I also measured the behind the bevel thickness of my 4 and it was the same as the Cruwear, so unless it's a true HOLLOW grind and not just a concave grind, it's at least no thicker behind the bevel than the older models. To me the grind difference here only matters up to the height of the grind shoulder, and with these being so low it's not a mountain of performance difference. We're still talking about a 2mm blade here. If you were adventurous enough to convex the flat saber grind down to a near Scandi grind it would be a ridiculous slicer.

Re: Cru Wear Centofante III !
I have no problem laying is back and convexing the bevel. I do that on most knives now for the initial reprofile and they cut good. I have the worksharp with blade grinding attachment so it’s quick, easy work when it’s not a high wear resistance steel.

Re: Cru Wear Centofante III !
Another thing I was thinking about this morning, and I want to he clear I'm not trying to stand up for this knife or whatever, it's not like I lose money if you don't buy it, is that the price difference compared to the original comes from this being an entirely new design practically from the ground up. It probably doesn't share anything with the originals except maybe the blade and lock geometry. The original had one single nested liner vs two proud liners here, this one has scales which the original didn't have since it's injection molded, and has a back spacer and the change to screw construction. All of that requires new tooling/machining. It's also still a collaboration model so I'd assume some of the cost is going to the Centofante family but we'll never know those details. All of that plus more expensive materials all around equals a more expensive knife. This isn't a simple handle/steel type swap, it's an entirely new model that happens to be the same shape as an older one.
I may be a little biased, I've always been a fan of Frank Centofante's designs. I've always wanted to see the Vesuvius get a refreshing and some sprint runs but this is probably the closest to it that I'll ever see.

Re: Cru Wear Centofante III !
I've been amazed at the concern on the grind. The difference isn't going to be dramatic on 2mm stock, like I've been saying. It's not like it went from a 2mm stock FFG to a 4mm stock low saber flat.
Re: Cru Wear Centofante III !
I'm sure it would be a felt difference even at 2mm if it were truly ground that thin on the originals. My ARK for example, now that is a thinner and higher hollow grind on 2mm stock, I would expect to feel a difference there if they changed to a flat saber but this hollow grind wasn't as dramatic.

I like the way hollow grinds look and I like how deep ones cut.

Re: Cru Wear Centofante III !
I do too. I've come to really appreciate the hollow saber grinds Spyderco does, where in the past I was all about FFG on everything.prndltech wrote: ↑Tue Sep 10, 2024 9:00 am

Re: Cru Wear Centofante III !
Not sure on a total production but seems low like under the normal 500-2000. I’m guessing 100-500 range.Buddafucco wrote: ↑Mon Sep 09, 2024 4:20 pmIndiana Knives... https://indianaknives.com/products/spyd ... -exclusive

Re: Cru Wear Centofante III !
Mine got here today. I really like it! Maybe my favorite knife so far this year.

Re: Cru Wear Centofante III !
Old school (yet upgraded) model without the stupid mega-choil? I need to try it out
Re: Cru Wear Centofante III !
I’ve been using Jack Wolf Knives a lot for EDC lately and come to really appreciate how easily a well executed hollow grind move through certain materials. Those same materials present a lot more resistance to full flat grinds.
Either way, it’s always nice to be given the option by Spyderco. I’d love to see more knives with with hollow grinds, especially full-height where possible.
I can only imagine how good cutting performance would be with a blade featuring a high vanadium carbide steel with a Spyderco perfected heat treat and a low geometry full-height hollow…
Re: Cru Wear Centofante III !
So for anyone who has one-- can you push the closed blade in beyond its resting point?
I am curious if they added a kick on this run. The originals don't have a kick.

Re: Cru Wear Centofante III !
You can, and you can push it hard enough to hit the edge on the lock bar inside. Mine came with a little rolled spot in the edge and I've talked to one other person who also had it in the same spot. I can't really figure out why this would happen because there's plenty of space in normal opening and closing and you have to deliberately squeeze it to make it happen. I don't see it happening just from moving around in the box during shipping and it's in a baggy anyway, so it has to be some result of how they're assembled. Mine sharpened out very easily with just a micro bevel.

Re: Cru Wear Centofante III !
Honestly I think this is one of the best folder releases from spyderco in quite a while imo.. I would’ve liked to seen a hollow grind on it but that’s definitely not a big issue for me. I especially love those old school clips man, I’m mostly familiar with this clip style on my c52 and c54 calypso’s and I think they just work amazingly, better than the modern standard spoon style clip like on the delica/para etc. I just prefer the tension and design more, so i love seeing them still producing those clip styles. Come to think of it, on the cru wear AYOOB sprint, they used the modern spoon clip while the original model had the “old school” clip, just food for thought. Anyway good job spyderco. If this release had black linen micarta handles I’d probably break down and the throw the bucks down for one.

Re: Cru Wear Centofante III !
Mine has a dull spot on the edge as well. 1/2” up from the sharpening choil. Its actually visible.Evil D wrote: ↑Wed Sep 11, 2024 2:26 pm

Re: Cru Wear Centofante III !
Thanks, D and Shannon for the updates. I figured that was the case from the old models and lack of a visible kick on the new one. It is good to have that confirmed. Seems like an unfortunate design choice.
I still think it's a cool run of a cool knife.
Enjoy them, those who get one!

Mine is on the way.
Slightly offtopic, to me this remains the best hollow grind ever done by Spyderco, would love to see something similar again at some point.
