They would have to come into my house to get them. :D
Owning is still legal, only carrying is restricted exceptions are fixed blades with under 12cm blade length and two hand folders (you have to use both hands to open them). I Can open my Swiss Army pocket knife with one hand but anyway... stupid laws. LOL

I say f*** knife laws. Criminals will still carry knives even when all knife types are banned for carrying. Only the law abiding citizen is affected by this sh*t-

Germany...

A one hand folder with 5cm blade length is more dangerous by law than a 11cm blade on a fixed blade. That doesn't make sense AT ALL. About weapon laws I don't even want to start LOOOL

DON'T TAKE YOUR SPYDERCO TO NEW YORK!

I just returned from a vacation to NYC with my family. An officer confiscated my brand new Para 2 saying is was a gravity knife and illegal in NY. I tried to reason with him explaining that it is actually a utility knife with a quality low friction bushing and strong blade, which yes, makes it possible to open with gravity or centrifugal force, but it was designed to be opened with the thumb hole and snapping it is really not necessary. To prove that it is indeed a gravity knife, he proceeded to flick it open, perhaps two dozen times, very rapidly, and with a great degree of skill. While he was violently snapping the blade, I asked which exactly which folding knives are legal here? He mumbled something like a Swiss Army knife... he thought.

Apologizing for my error and offering to return my Para 2 immediately to my hotel room and out of NYC the next day only got the response "I am sorry to be the person who has to take this from you because Spyderco makes excellent knives".

Later that day, depressed and back in my hotel room, I pulled out my locking 3.5" Swiss Army from my luggage and yes... with a little practice, I could snap that blade open too. Go figure.

The good news is that I know that officer is going to enjoy that Para 2 and I am excited about the delivery of my replacement.

I was just up in the NY area, but not in the city itself. I brought a slippy for use in the city, if I wanted to travel there.

Unfortunately, trying to reason with a law enforcement official assumes that the law itself is reasonable in the first place - not always a reasonable assumption. Sorry for your loss!!

Just to be clear NYC and NYS are two differant worlds. In the free part of the state carry what you wish including fixed blades nobody cares .

Oh they also give us gun permits,I've carried for 30 plus years, as well as most of my friends and neighbors.

When In NYC ( something I try to avoid, btw) I drop an Endura into my pocket, no clip showing .

It does pi$$ me off when knife companies won't ship to the free part of the state though. Its NYC with the stupid laws......

The funny thing about the NYC law is that it seems to fully support fixed blades. I was under the impression that crimes happen with fixed blades and kitchen knives more often than anything else.

You're right. But in the People's Republic of New York, common sense is in very short supply.

If I go into NYC limits, I only carry my SAK in my pocket. My :spyder: 's stay home.

IMHO, sounds like you ran into a VERY understanding cop.

The law sucks sometimes but that could have gone sour fast. You can buy a ton of $97 knives for the price of a decent attorney. :(

There is little common sense at play in NYC. No locking knives (they've even tried to say that if you can open it one handed it's illegal aka no ukpk's), but carry a fixed blade up to 4" in length and you're ok.

And you're absolutely right; statistically and relatively speaking, almost no knife crime happens with folders. It's the cheap steak and kitchen knives you can pick up for $6 at Home Goods. Go figure. I can't wait to move.

Look, NYC actually did have a knife violence problem, which probably was not replicated statewide. They adopted a "solution" that clearly doesn't get at the root of things. But it's hard, if you're in charge of municipal law-making, to ignore the complaints of those who have been mugged (or whatever), in favor of a purely rational response.

Welcome to democracy.

A more accurate statement would be:

DON'T TAKE ANY LOCKING FOLDER TO NEW YORK CITY!

If you look at the original pile of knives Vance stole from NYC merchants, only a few were Spydercos. And, as has been pointed out before in this thread, New York City and the remainder of New York State are two vastly different places. Most upstate New Yorkers would be quite happy to see NYC secede and become the 51st state or a UN protectorate.

I've read Westchester county, close to Ossining, where I was raised is about the same. I noticed the change in atmosphere the last time I was up there. When I grew up it was kind of country. I'd be wary there too.

Also quite sure when you go north a bit the stigma leaves.

JB2011, sorry to hear about your bad experience.

How did the officer know you were carrying the PM2?

Was the clip showing?

Also, what part of the city were you in?

Thanks, Chris

Sure he is!

Sounds like a well informed thief to me! Who, while he can appreciate Spyderco quality, is still a thief. He could have let you take it back to your room and put it up. :(

I know, after Sal posted his rationale, you switched, but as a NYS resident I don't agree with Spyderco's rationale to make a blanket decision for the whole state. It is nothing but an enabler move to further embolden political grandstanders in NYC! Of course, a business has every right to sell where and how they deem fit. But being a premier manufacturer, it's disappointing to realize Spyderco is imagining enforcement of NYC law statewide.....something a first year Law student can successfully argue against. Zip codes where Vance has jurisdiction are public knowledge.....enter those into the ordering system as no-ship-locations and be done with it!
I pocket clip carry 4.5 to 5.5 inch blades where I live in NY, and carry at least two sub 4" knives with me every commute into NYC. I have never had a single issue.
We can do what we can as citizens, but nothing is going to happen with Lowes, Home Depot, Spyderco, Sears, etc. folding to the unenforceable of NYS being called NYC!!!

Not to sure of NYC's knife violence problem, but I do know their crime rate is lower then most of NY's other cities . Some years our murder rate was 4 times that of the big city.

NY times did a piece a few years back about the mean streets of NY not being in NYC .

Oh and that very understanding cop? 10 to 1 he's got a box full of knives in his locker that go his his buddies and co-workers. I say this as I have friends on the cop side that have let me go through theirs......
