Inspired by another member, I RIT dyed my M4 manix to a dark royal blue.

Image

It feels a little superficial to say this, but just changing the color really makes me want to carry this knife more. I hope the color lasts.

turned out great. The light tan does kind of suck, but I don't care much as it will get darker with the dirt i get on it. I did think about dying a darker tan or different color all together

Ruby Slippers for Police 3 Custom

#706

Post by RoBoTech »

I ran out of projects while waiting for a Military to come in. It's gonna get the treatment when it does.
So, to keep busy, I decided to pull the smoothed Black G-10 off my Brad Southard Police 3 Custom.
I put on a set of Ruby Red G-10, fine weave, and upgraded all the screws to larger head and TORX. That's about all.
Didn't know how it would turn out, so didn't touch the black G-10.
I think it came out pretty nice. So it stays this way.

I am doing a Orange G-10 Coarse texture set for my regular Police 3. I have already stonewashed everything steel except the screws. It will be about a 1/8" thicker than stock when I am done.
I will post that one when I am done.

Oh, I know exactly what you mean. I luv it, too.
Southard had got into a discussion, at USN forums, about Michael Janich's Spyderco Endura mods (same guy that designed the Spyderco Yojimbo).
Michael made the mods and sold these Enduras to his Self Defense students.
He re-profiled the blades (like this Police 3 blade has been), and shortened them to 3" for more "legal" carry. And they were a Wharncliff blade.
Most notably, these knives had blades that were shorter than the frames were deigned for. A lot of people bemoan the shorter blade. Thus the discussion at USN.
Make NO mistake, the shorter blade on these makes the knife "faster", more controllable, and deadly. No "toy" with this one. All business.
But does it have to look ugly? I don't think so.
This is what it looked like when I bought it. Still a a beautiful knife.

Image

So Southard said he would do it to a Police 3 and make it MUCH longer than the Janich's Endura.
He shortened the blade to 3 3/4", thinned and profiled the edge (this thing is SHARP!). Of course the legal length thing is not addressed.
This blade is for one thing. NO EDC on this one.
This was a ONE shot deal on the Police 3 from Southard. There are no more of them.
I managed to get it from a friend for a very decent price. Less than $150. It came with "smoothed" original black G-10, and the Titanium clip you see on it now. I believe that clip is the previous owner's creation. It doesn't look like an STR.
I have been rotating my Civilian, Military, and this knife for several months. I almost always have one in my waistline, especially if I am out and about. I also carry an EDC. My Chokwe or a Urban Wharncliff mostly, at this time. Soon to change.
Anyway, it will take WAAY more than $150.00 this time around. So much more, I expect it will stay with me.

Very nice.

I'm of the impression that RIT dye will be pretty permanent, but worst case scenario you can always touch it up later.

Orange Police 3

Here is a Police 3 I modded this morning.
Rough textured Orange scales, stonewashed everything but the screws, and changed all scale and clip screws to T-9 TORX for one driver dis-assembly.
