Yes please do. As someone that carries a serrated K390 LJ every day, I have a vested interest. And thank you!

My reply is posted up in general discussion now. I did talk to Wendy who is awesome and I will be receiving this mule for testing. I am grateful for Sal and the spyderco team for arranging this opportunity for me. I will post all my results in my thread in the general discussion unless Sal prefers to have me list it here.

Hi Steeltoez,

Nor rules or controls from me. Just do your thing.

Hey Red Leader,

Thanx for bring up the subject. I've been promoting "teeth" for 47 years now. In my opinion, teeth are a separate edge geometry and need to be treated as such.

Thanks to this forum, I have been learning more about the benefits of serrations. I am especially interested in how the benefits of geometry can influence edge retention. I don't know if such things are best done with CATRA, but when you get a great geometry (i.e. serrations), as well as a great 'edge holding' steel (k390, Magnamax, 10V, etc), I wonder then if you have the makings of a 'super super steel'. One of the reasons I carry the SE LJ in K390. Great design on that one.

Geometry doesn't outright affect edge retention, but it does affect overall performance. Note, geometry should be viewed as something more than just edge angle(s). This will also expose the exceptions, and the limitations of any steel, be it "super", or not. It will help you to understand what sal always likes to express in regards to steel, "no good, bad, better, best, just different" (of course I'm paraphrasing here).

If steel and sharpening is the gateway to knife performance, I'd say heat treating and geometry is the blackhole.

For me it is nice to see new people coming on board and not really having to suffer FOMO. If a person really wants a Mule, they can buy one. I really appreciate having a regular in the line up, great steels with enough production, and a new wonder steel to get all hyped about now and then.
I noticed every single Mule Team is listed as "Coming Soon" or "Sold Out". Even the SPY27 shows "sold out".

Is this true, or is there a glitch in the new website?

Yeah, Spyderco will post a stickied-thread that will fill us all in on what the date will be. Pop into the forum ~twice a week on any two days of your choosing and you (or anyone else who follows this advice) will not miss when this Mule will be available.

Just out of curiosity are we looking at 4th quarter 2025 or first quarter 2026 on the magnamax mules? Or is it still a secret?

Hi Emerson,

Sooner than that. I just received an early test sample of a serrated version.

Pete's latest video had it at 1700 rope cuts which, comparatively, is better than the results he has gotten from his K390 cut tests (multiple). Further in the discussion in the comments, there is some speculation that K390 could potential jump up in numbers a bit from his previous testing simply due to his refined sharpening regiment.

With Steeletoez example hitting just shy of K390, and Pete's hitting above, we are in the ballpark for sure, which is awesome to hear. And gotta admit, I flinched when Erica took her example and pried it in the wood. But it stood the test. Thanks to all 3 of these early testers.

I've already been hearing a ton of chatter about seeing this steel in production folders, and the expectation is that it is a given. I don't know if Spyderco has confirmed/denied one way or another, but it is getting a lot of people very excited, and seeing it hit the Golden lineup could make big waves in 2026 (for Spyderco's 50th?) and beyond. Lot's of good to come.

Sal, thanks for taking the leap on this one and being on the bleeding edge of steel technology and advancement.

Hoping to snag at SE Magnamax at the SFO when they release.

I've been haunting the Mule Team forums (in general, but most recently due to my interest in the MagnaMax Mule Team), and noticed that they went from someone posting in one of the forums every day, to now, where no one has posted in a week. I don't have anything to say, other than I am curious is that is due to a forum snafu or just interesting statistics...

Hope your Friday is a great one.
