@Wartstein Yeah, I appreciate that. As for the Opinel, they use one of the toughest steels out there, so it is no surprise that they hold up.
Just for comparison, below are some example of Opinels (first blade length, then blade stock thickness)

One can see:

- The Opinel No 6 with about "small" Chap blade length (or even a bit longer) gets away with just 1.33 mm blade stock (Chap has 2.00 mm)
- The Opinel No 9 which has an 3.51" blade still has less than 2.0 mm blade stock (1.91)
(And the Chap XL we´re talking about here would presumably also offer a 3.5 " blade

No. 6: 2.87" / 1.33 mm ("2.8 "Chaparral")
No. 7: 3.07" / 1.46mm
No. 8: 3.28" / 1.62 mm
No. 9: 3.51" / 1.91mm (" 3.5" Chaparral XL")
No. 10 3.92" / 2.14mm

My Chaparral LW is my favorite Spyderco small/big knife. I'm okay with its size, but I'd definitely be interested in some different steels with the thin blade.

For a larger Chaparral, I think I’d want a “just under 3.5 inch” blade.

A Chap L, Endela size and
A Chap XL Endura or Native Chief size.
No, I'm not really that greedy, but I'd buy both.

I’d be happy with the standard size Chaparral in a steel other than CTS-XHP.

Hi JFR1,

And what steel would be your first choice? Any others have a choice?

Hi Sal,
I personally would love to see a Chap in Magnacut. I've got a couple knives in S110V that work very well for me and I'd love a little pocket slicer in Magnacut to compliment them. In all fairness, I'd buy one in S110V, too, but I've been trying to find a Magnacut knife that isn't going to compete against my Native 5 and UKPK (both in S110V).

Came back to check and did not expect the thread to have exploded like this. Really exciting to see.

Thank you Sal for the welcome! Thanks too for a great selection of knives and steels!

My steel choice for a Chap XL would be Magnacut, but if even a little more toughness is needed then CruWear would be fine too.

The Chap is one if the few models I would consider buying one of if I ever started buying any more knives again (I haven't purchased a knife in years).

If I do get one, I would like it to be in Magnacut, with the same rounded serration pattern as the CTS-XHP one has now.

I'd like to see Magnacut and SPY27 as options. S90V would be pretty nice, as well.

Yeah, I concur. 3.48" so I can legally carry it here in Colorado. Purely selfish, but that is my request!

Agreed; that would be a great length for the Chappenstein, and I'm not even in Colorado!

Thanks for considering this, Sal.

As regards steel: tough (like CruWear), for extra insurance against breakage for a long thin blade? Or hard (like S110V) for a long-lasting laser slicer? Dunno, I'd leave that to the folks at Spyderco to find an ideal steel for this knife.

+2!

3.48" would mean almost exactly PM2 blade length dimensions - and if the choil area of a Chap XL would remain exactly the same as on the current Chap, it would offer 3.03" of cutting edge, and thus a tad more than Manix, Endela, Stretch 2.

(As for "Chappenstein": I am still honored, my friend! But again: I don´t think that I´d deserve this by any means just for annoying the forum for years now with phantasies about a Chap XL... ;) )

For a longer thin blade, I’d think I might want something tougher. I like Cruwear and 4v. Magnacut is tougher, but Magnacut + Spyderco now means “salt knife” to me, I don’t know if you want to go that far with the concept. Something tough and stainless like AEB-L or 14c28n might do very well.
I’d be happy if it were still XHP.
I’d LOVE one with teeth.
I’ll be a fan of pretty much any under 3.5 inch lockback with Chaparral/Sage/Native ergonomics.

I don't have a MagnaCut == Salt association built yet. So, that would be okay with me. Just don't make it yellow. If MagnaCut, it should be obvious looking at it that it's not a salt version unless a Salt Chap is intended. A CruCarta Chap may be interesting. I wouldn't object to something like REX121 (don't have one yet) or similar to push things a little. But, I also don't object to XHP.

Magnacut / salt edition would be my first preference, followed closely by Spy27 or S90V.

Im intrigued by Rex 121 after hearing reports of how stable and relatively easy it is to maintain.
I’m not sure if Shawn Houston’s 15V would be compatible with a 2mm Taichung model, but that would be nice too as would K390, M4 or Cruwear.

Basically any of the good stuff would be good and I’d buy any of it on a Chap. ;)

Not fussy on the steel, just don't make it a "lightweight". Keep the liners. Even if magnacut, not everything needs to go linerless (ie PM2 salt is just right).

Definitely!!

Two of the defining features of the Chap exactly are 1.) its extremely solid built with steel liners and steel backspacer and 2,) its superthin handle...
...and 2.) would most likely not be possible without 1.) (a folder that thin would probably flex a bit much without liners).

And: It is still pretty light anyway due to that thinness of handle and blade...

This model has internal blade stops that contact the internal liners. If you went full LW, would the blade stops be as effective if it contacts solely FRN? I'm not saying the FRN would break (FRN is strong stuff), but certainly something would change, no?

Warrstein, you say flex. Are you talking about some of the flex you get when you press down on the blade with some Seki models? Or, are you thinking of something else?
