Kind of sad to see so many K390 models getting the axe as well. I love K390 & hoped to see it get wider adoption in the knife community as I think it is the best non-stainless high wear resistance tool steel for a folding knife (yes, even better than my beloved Cru-Wear and M4). But non-stainless is always a tough sell to the non-AFI crowd (apart from the recent D2 budget folder craze, which I personally think was some sort of anomaly)
Between that, and choice of scale color maybe? I know some of the guys I know that are into knives, are intimidated by K390 (novice sharpening skills and/or equipment) But I do know none of them cared for my K390 Endela when I had that for while, because of the hue of blue. I'm willing to bet if they used a blue comparable to the KnifeJoy exclusives, they would have fared a bit better in sales.
Nah....I'm a bit weird about colors too but (IMO) there's nothing wrong with the blue they used. Glad I got my K390 wharnie Delica. I'm also happy with the PE Endela I have
Of all the things I've lost I miss my mind the most!

Man, if you see your favorite Wharnie or Byrd on the list, grab it quick!

I feel very lucky to already have everything on the list that I have wanted, except the Watu. And now I've ordered that at sale price. Maybe this makes up for my less-than-stellar showing at the seconds sale.

I think the K390 discontinuation says more about the edge and shape more than the steel. Looks like SE and Wharncliffes are the real losers here. Plain edge is staying around. So I am guessing SE and Wharncliffe blades are just not selling that well.
I admittedly used to think they were strange looking, compared to how strange Spyderco's already look haha...then I got ahold of a few, and became my favorites! I wish more people would give them a chance. Game changers for warehouse work!
Yeah they do perform very well. I would just guess serrated edges and wharncliffes in the broader market just don't bring as much sales to the table. Tough call for them I am sure, but would make business sense.

Nothing in the US was discontinued because there's only a few models made in the US anyways, and they're the core models?

I looked at BladeHQ for Spyderco and it lists the number of models by Country of Origin (not 100% accurate but it’s an indication - Byrd not included in China models) and USA is just behind Japan:

  1. Japan (328)
  2. USA (296)
  3. China (116)
  4. Taiwan (96)
  5. Italy (17)
Yes but how many of those are variations of the same models? All the collaboration models or the more "unique" models seem to be Taiwanese made. Paysan, swayback, techno, etc probably sell way less than pm2s etc

I don't believe a steel change (only) has ever led to a new sku, and they only get marked discontinued if the sku is.
Ah, that's too bad. I was hoping the Waterway and the Siren being disco'ed (the latter from last year's list) meant they were going to be reintroduced as MagnaCut models.
I wouldn't feel so butt hurt about it get discontinued if it came in magnacut.

I’m always sad to see amazing designs and projects get discontinued. But it’s necessary to move on to more exciting stuff. I think salts are coming in pm2, manix, para3 and more. Micro knives, a Bowie, and quality control upgrades. I sure feel like their are models I wanted but will have to let them go. Side note we’ve had like 4 Black Fridays from Spyderco dealers. So that a plus.

Man!
That's a long list, and quite a few I had on my radar.

Not the best timing for panic buying more knives.. but I might have to.

k390 wharnie delica, CE Resilience LW, Atlantic salt, black bugs... where all on my radar and I was under no impression I needed to hurry.

Sages and Chaparrals are sad surprises (for my wallet this year..)
I know, it was really surprising to see that. Glad I got the Sun/Moon during the MAP holiday.

For me, that's true...never really liked blue on knives. If the FRN K390s only came in shades of brown or green, I'd buy them. As such, my only K390 is the G-10 Police 4.

I got a backup K390 PE Wharncliffe Delica and Endela. Hidden gems for sure. Was tempted by the salts too, but held back because I suspect they will make a comeback in Magnacut.

If anyone has second thoughts about the Watu, now is the time!

It's late here. I'll sleep on it and see if my models of interest are still on the shelves tomorrow. In the meantime, please go and buy them all. It would make tomorrow so much easier for me :D

Don't want to sidetrack the thread but how is the Paysan you got? The one I got from the first sale is fantastic. I'm even more happy I have it now that it's been discontinued

I have the Swayback already and like it too. I'm kind of surprised it's been disco'd already
It’s great no lock stick very pleased. Same here glad I got it. Maybe the Swaybacks will be discounted I’d like to pick one up.
Swayback is on sale at National for $220

Picked up another two, this time from Knifecenter: Endura K390 Wharncliffe and and a Atlantic Salt LC200N SE..

Sorry to see them go.

Happy to have them enroute.

Blue FRN on those K390s can be RIT Dyed. Definitely black, but I bet you could get a nice dark green too. Just sayin.
