I wish someone made non-grooved micarta scales. Seems like there would be a market for that. Has there ever been a burgundy micarta Manix?!
I would give these a look. I know they are a little more expensive, but the colors are great. I have some for my Shaman that I am really enjoying. I would describe the feel of these as an inbetween of third party canvas micarta and Spyderco's Micarata on the PM2 Crucarta model. If you have handled that one. A little softer than canvas typical canvas to the touch, but not as fuzzy or whatever that the PM2 seems to come with.

https://firesideco.com/product-category ... o-manix-2/

Also interesting to read their information on Terotuf vs. Micarta on their website. Obviously, it is biased because it is on their website, but interesting to read why they chose to work with the material.
Thanks! I like these, but I’m just waiting on a color I actually like!

Hi olywa sorry to hear about the screw holes. I have 6 pairs of scales from them at the moment waiting for the 7th of all those scales there was 1 set i also had to deepen the screw holes from. They did not need much in my case but its not fun if you ever would buy another pair from them please mention it they are good guys and will definitely help you out the next time. About the clip on the grooved scales that is indeed a technical issue with the grooving pattern. I use mine without a clip personally but i can imagine that isn’t for everyone. Hope you will enjoy them anyway. Once on the knife those scales really alter the design definitely the grooved scales give a nice grip.
[/quote]

Thanks for the response Apollo. I let the folks at Cuscadi know about the issue and they were very responsive but indicated the scales worked on their Manix 2. I'm not sure how they managed it but I didn't press since I figured it was fixable by me and I find the scales worth working on. Just had to be careful on the countersink depth. The Dremel made quick work of the clip section and it cleaned up nicely. Once done and mounted I was very happy with them.

On to the bearings, I’m interested to what type of bearings Spyderco puts in there knives. Some good info on this page:

https://www.bcprecision.com/pages/ball- ... -materials

I’m curious as well, with CPM 15V as hard as it is I would think it would benefit from a harder bearings with less friction.
i've seen them out there. try rcbladeworks.

It doesn’t look like they do the Manix, but their stuff is amazing! Thanks

I’m not on social media so I don’t see that side of the world, and my wallet thanks me for that!
they do, but their site is a little wonky. go to their listing of materials, select one you like, and then they have a drop down menu for models. the manix 2 is an option.

Ah, I see! The first few that I click on didn’t have the Manix as an option, but there are some that do! Thanks

Honestly i think they are probably correct most of my Manixes with scales are more then a few years old. The one that i needed to fix was the only new one. Its typical Spyderco with there cqi. They change little things like in my tuff scale for example they changed a stop pin so i needed to make a dent in the scale since the tuff cuscadi had was newer and had a shorter stop pin. So probably they are also using an older Manix 2 for there scale fittings and the hardware on that one is probably a tiny bit longer. :thinking

I modded an S110V LW as well, discarding the FCRP scales.
i'd like to hear more about this one, specifically.
LB, after removing the pivot screws, I basically pried the FCRP handle apart far enough to dig the blade, pivot, and washers out. A forumite had described how to do it in a fairly detailed post, and I imitated his method using tools I had available (I don't know the post, but could probably find it). I just stuffed thicker and thicker objects between the scales until the parts fell out. I didn't try to preserve the scales, liners, cage, ball, or spring, since I planned to replace all of them. The only tricky part was avoiding damage to the washers during the prying process. If I had had spare washers on hand I wouldn't have cared, and it would have gone a lot faster!

Yes, and yes they are.

Edited to say: I think a really cool mod would be to snatch up a pinned SPY 27 LW cheap off the secondary mkt and install these scales.

so, was any modification needed to make it work with the scales? you should tell rockscales about this if they are actually compatible. with the new lw models having screws, they could be getting a lot more business.

Hahaha! The only "mod" beyond just switching out the scales is adding a lanyard tube which of course the FRCP handle doesn't have. Conveniently, Rockscale sells them.

BTW I just checked on SPY 27 Manix 2s: The price of the cheaper ones has jumped about $30-35 in the past month or so.

I'm blown away by this. I read their description on their website and figured the scales wouldn't work with LWs. Because that is what they say. This is a game changer.

a quick image search on google shows that the metal piece that holds the spring for the manix is quite different between the g10 and lw manixes. is there any way you can show us the insides and/or more angles so we can see how it fits together?

Wait. You know what, ladybug, you caught me, and I'm sorry, but I wasn't trying to be deceptive. I just totally forgot that you need an expendable G-10 model to cannibalize for the part you're referring to. In my case, I already had the LW, then bought the scales, and then bought a base model to get that part.

I feel like a jerk for not remembering this, since it more than doubles the cost of the mod. It didn't make an impression on me at the time, since I already had the FRCP knife lying around unused, and it felt like getting a brand new high-end Manix for a fairly reasonable price.

Sorry again. :downcast
