Isn’t the whole point of the forum knife is for spyderco to test out something new? Steel, handle material, handle texture/color/pattern? Or is that just a coincidence?
I always assumed the point was to have a different version of a beloved model to celebrate the Spyderco Forum and it's members. They may intentionally try to do something different but I'm not sure that's a must. The 2015 Native 5 LW used S90V. Was that the first time Spyderco used S90?
First maroon native lw handle is what I thought about.
Ok you got me. I thought it might've been the first maroon handle too but did think FRN color was a big enough deal to support the whole first thing

The 2009 Forum Native was Grn G10 CPM S110V . I believe possibly Natives have been Forum knives five times .
Not sure but I think you're referring to the 2013 Spyderco Forum Knife which was a the green diamond textured scales and S110V steel. I had one but sold it off in my only purge. Kind of regret that now which is one of the reasons I don't sell knives very often

According to this the 2009 Spyderco Forum knife was a purple Native with S30V

You are correct , my mistake with too many years of Natives in my tiny brain . I had one myself. Same same . Dan

- Since a Magnacut Manix 2 LW has been announced already (it has, right?):

Why not make the first run of that model into a/the forum knife? :smirk
YES please but with G10, not a LW :smiling-heart-eyes

1] I want to point out that there are those on this forum that to whom certain knives are off limits. I think we should hear from those people before we do anything else.
This is a good point. At the same time, it should also be said that where restrictions apply, it's usually perfectly legal to use any type of blade/locking mechanism on private grounds. Hence there's still plenty of enjoyment to be had even for those forum members who live in legally restrictive environments.

2] Maybe Spyderco will be more open to a forum knife if we raise the money first?
We could do something even crazier : tell Sal to assemble whatever model he wants.

3] If the knife chosen is very expensive most people will not bother.
Something around the 100€/$ mark would seem reasonable to me.

My serious thought is that there should be a a knife with either a unique color and/or blade profile that is sold continuously at SFO only. The Model number could have the FK prefix/suffix indicating its status as a Forum Knife.

Well, given that BD1N UKP costs 85€ and VG-10 Delica around 100€, a budget of 100€ on a limited run does not leave much room for customization.

65 posts and almost as many different suggestions.

1. Selection of a model is not easy to please all/most.
2. Price becomes a big issue, as mentioned, which limits "Exotica".
3. Legal becomes an issue due to Country/Local requirements.
4. How many to make is always an issue. We don't want extras laying around that we have to discount to sell.
5. What to put on the knife seems like a challenge to serve most?
6. What Steel to use?
7. What handle material to use?
8. What lock, if any, to use?
8. Where to make it? Who has capacity?

Threads like this one do not make it any easier to make a decision.

That's why I thought my idea held some merit. It doesn't eliminate every obstacle, but it does manage several of them.

Indeed. But I'm guessing that changing the colour of a stock's model handle, as well as engraving a few letters on the blade, could fit in that enveloppe.

Certainly that wouldn't be too ambitious of a forum knife. OTOH it'd make it more accessible and faster to ship.

How about a do it yourself forum knife. We all just buy whatever knife we want and get it laser etched somewhere local to us to say something to the effect of "SFK 2022"

Then we can have a thread dedicated to SFK 2022 pictures, and points can be awarded for style and originality.

I would not get too hot on BD1N or VG10 in differently colored handle, although I certainly would not expect some some dedicated / complicated limited run. But I am serious about the drop point UKPK - if Spyderco could bring it in some nice FRN color AND any other steel that what is on the market - that would be really cool. Like seriously COOL.

It absolutely is Sal's call of course. Our job is only to make is life harder :grin-smiling-eyes

Given the state of things I would be honestly surprised if Spyderco would decide to make a forum knife anytime soon (it most certainly won't happen in 2022 unless they are working on it since 2021, but somehow managed to keep Sal from talking about it :savouring )

Hey Jim,

Are you thinking of a regular model that we currently make?

Yes, absolutely. I think if the logistics can be kept as simple as possible, it is more likely to happen. Still, there is the "cat herding" problem of color choice and model choice.

that's part of why i was thinking about the ukpk as well. it's produced at golden and it's legal in most places, making it easier logistically and available to more people across the forum. just have a unique model without all the billboarding... it would basically be a sprint for forum members. i'm guessing it would at least sell better than the flag pm2 has, especially if it was made with magnacut like i suggested.

Looks better in person, pic looks too brown. Always a great choice IMO. LW N5 in Magnacut with cool scale color?

Hey Jim,

I agree. Like Ladybug, I always seem to lean towards a UKPK. Large enough to be functional for most tasks. It serves more audiences, especially overseas. Legal in most jurisdictions. I carry one quite often and it's a very convenient model to carry and use. Especially the light-weight. If anyone hasn't actually carried and used one, it might surprise? I always travel with one.

I wonder if there would be any interest in an UK or the new Lil' Native Slipit? CPM-SPY27, Cobalt Blue scales, 2023 forum knife engraved on the back-spacer spring?
