I do agree with others that I'm surprised about the Caly 3.

As far as the Pits folder goes, I was wondering is TazKristi or Sal (or somebody in the know) would confirm if the blue anodized/bead blasted version is still coming, or has this whole project been cut from the Spyderco line-up?

When it comes to the Ulize, I had been wanting a big folder. I was contemplating the Military and the Police; however, I hadn't even given a thought to the Ulize. Upon seeing it on the discontinued list I took a closer look, and it is one cool knife. The curves of the blade and the forward blade cant are eye-catching and beautiful. It is both stabby and slashy. The grip is thin and nicely contoured. Anyway, I caved, and as of today I own a :spyder: Ulize. If it hadn't been discontinued, I probably wouldn't have noticed this knife. :D

The Ulize is pretty awesome. It's Police sized, has a nice finger guard, good ergos, it's pretty impressive. It's a little more expensive than the Police, so whichever you think looks better will probably work good for you.

Even if you cross all fingers *and* toes, then hop on one foot, holding your breath while repeating "there's no place like Seki, there's no place like Seki, there's..." that's gonna be a long shot!

But I hope you're right ;)

This is saddening that it continually works that way.

So many greats and legends among the historic line-up that were poor sellers during their production run... then all of a sudden "get noticed" after they are disco'ed, and go on to become cult classics with hard to find scavenger hunt sky rocketing prices...
SO glad Spyderco does this for us and puts up with all of us oddball consumers. :spyder:

I do like the Ulize, has some sensual lines to it... but I don't think I'd see myself carrying it often enough to justify.
Is it a stiff opener/closer? That's what I've read elsewhere (which is probably a good thing to control all that swinging steel!)
Going back to Caly.

I haven't had the Ulize for long, but I am a long-time knife guy and Spyderco collector, so take this for what it's worth:

1) The Ulize is a big, aggressive-looking, cutting machine. The lines are graceful and stylish. It is awesome to behold. :spyder:
2) If you work around a bunch of knife-hating wussies, their eyes will probably pop right out of their heads when you whip out the Ulize. I happen to enjoy it when this happens. :D
3) The blade shape will be useful for many tasks. It has lots of belly area, it will pull-cut into the recurve and the tip is nice-n-stabby for puncturing. Of course, this blade shape is probably best sharpened with a Sharpmaker rather than a flat stone.
4) Most surprisingly, this knife absolutely disappears in your pocket despite its length. It is thinner than a Delica or a linerless Pacific Salt and much thinner than a PM2. It is about as wide as a Delica, less wide than a PM2 or endura and way less wide than a Pacific Salt. The only thing you need is some pocket depth, because the Ulize is pretty long. My jeans have plenty of pocket depth for the Ulize. It has a longer blade than the Military, but the handle is noticeably smaller, so I would describe the blade to handle ratio as very good. It has some weight to it (4.8 oz), so it is better suited to jeans than flimsy dress pants.
5) Since it is a backlock, it is stiffer opening than something like a compression lock or liner-lock; however, it is more ambidextrous. Although mine is new, I can flick it open but only with wrist action. Of course, the normal thumb sweep works just fine and dandy. If your primary desire it to flick your knife, there are other Spyderco models that will suit you better. One-hand closing is, of course, no problem.

The bottom line: The Ulize is a very sweet knife, and if you're looking for a 4"+ folder it would be a great option, especially since it carries so much smaller than its blade size would indicate.

This is the one that jumped out at me on the list. It's been in the catalog for so long, and on my wish list as well. It's just been too expensive for me. Sad to see it go!

I like the Ulize a lot. Mine is super smooth, and doesn't seem overly stiff at all.

Just got my Ulize out to carry this weekend. This is such a nice knife, and does carry very easily for its size.

I was not too surprised at any of the knives getting the axe but the Caly 3. It is too good of a design so I expect it will come around in a new format, such as different scale material and new blade steel (at least I hope so).

Caly 3 RIP

#74

Post by Bolster »

The Caly 3.5 is a nice knife, I own several, but it's no replacement for the Caly 3. I carry some version of the Caly 3 several days a week, and the 3.5s see pocket time maybe once a month. The 3.5 is just long enough it pokes my leg in pocket when moving about, and the blade is long enough that fine tip control requires some concentration. The Caly 3 just disappears in the pocket, & has a respectably sized blade that's easily controllable for fine tip control. It's an awesome design and I'm looking forward to Caly 3 sprints.

Fortunately, have a few put away for later use:

Maybe we are in the minority, but I too actually like the Caly 3 a bit more than the 3.5.

I prefer the Caly3 to the 3.5 too. I need more backups. That is impressive.

This wording lets me hope for an other version. Other than leather sheath? Different steel? Just dreaming?

Maybe it's time for a Caly 4? Deeper choil, same blade shape as UKPK, G10? Just sayin'.
