Sad to hear of your loss Pete, I tried the appeal route and playing the firefighter card with similar results. As posted in a similar thread regarding confiscations, the interest in helping you get a "prohibited weapon" back to the vendor which is now in the same legal bin as grenade launchers, is very low.

A bit off topic, I like the suggestion that to get involved in the political process but it has some pitfalls as I see it. As flipe8 posted, I too was leary of drawing too much attention to the issue. Who knows how many folks who have no use for a pocket knife will react when they have seen for the 22nd time a news story regarding thugs and knives? Secondly, I am not positive about how the process works in the US, but I believe each state has the same # of representatives, is that correct? In Canada, if you take a couple of cities, their population can impose their will on the rest of Canada. For example, Alberta, get enough soccer moms worked up over an issue in Calgary and Edmonton and look out. Rural Alberta or reason doesn't stand a chance.

That being said, you have to make an effort as Joe posted, or don't complain. Because if you do nothing, you can expect nothing positive to come about. And I have been working on supporting my kinda local retailer and accepting the occasional "honing" at the till, but it always makes it home with me.
