My Cruwear has been one of the easiest to keep screaming sharp with just a wee bit of touch up from time to time. I believe it has something to do with the absolutely perfect grind it came with.MacLaren wrote:Wow. Very interesting. I wouldn't call it difficult by any means, but as Roger mentioned it's definitely not what I expected from a "carbon steel". I wouldn't at all compare THIS knife/steel to something like an ESEE's 1095. The hardness absolutely gives it a different feel.

Anything come to mind that yo would compare it to in sharpening? Sounds like it takes more work than steels like cruwear, hap40 or superblue. How would it compare to m4 in edge taking? IMO m4 takes just a bit more work than the aforementioned steels.Evil D wrote:I wouldn't call it difficult by any means, but as Roger mentioned it's definitely not what I expected from a "carbon steel". Also, what impressions are you guys getting about the type of edge that it takes? I assumed this steel was going to be fairly easy to take to a very high level of sharpness...am I wrong?

Unfortunately I don't have any cruwear/hap40/super blue to compare it to, but I have had M4 and I would say this is both easier to sharpen and definitely takes a more keen edge. The only edge I've experienced like this are from my very thin Opinel's, and the "stickiness" of the edge feels very similar to what I get on those knives (though the sharpening experience is much different than Opinel's steel). I haven't done much with mine beyond some food prep and slicing paper so I can't comment on edge retention yet, but in touching it up on the Sharpmaker it was just immediately obvious that it was a much harder "feeling" steel than I expected, if that makes sense.

Re: 52100 Military, what are your plans?
Pulled the trigger on the HQ yesterday, meant to cancel my preorder but it shipped before I got the chance.
I will put the second one up for sale for what I paid plus shipping.

In stock at Howe's knife shop!
Re: 52100 Military, what are your plans?
Real tempted to snag my second one from them but I'll leave those for anyone who doesn't have one yet and cross my fingers that KC comes through.

I've been using mine regularly as an EDC for everything. Nice steel. NOT stainless, does require attention. Rinse and dry. Gets very sharp.

Sal - are you just keeping the hidden area of the tang dry to prevent corrosion? I think that's my plan.
Re: 52100 Military, what are your plans?
Pretty sure I just snagged their last one. Said one was in stock when I added to cart and I did a paypal checkout to get in and out in about a minute. Hopefully I snagged it.Evil D wrote:Real tempted to snag my second one from them but I'll leave those for anyone who doesn't have one yet and cross my fingers that KC comes through.

Put mine on the edge pro last night it took a few more passes than I was expecting to get it where I wanted it. Takes a real nice edge at 1000 grit.

Re: 52100 Military, what are your plans?
I had the same experience with Cruwear. Touch ups only took 3 or 4 swipes on the sharpmaker to get it back to screaming sharp.farnorthdan wrote:My Cruwear has been one of the easiest to keep screaming sharp with just a wee bit of touch up from time to time. Haven't had an opportunity to to use 52100 enough to need a touch up.

Miss the dome pivot, love the black finish. Tired of the bling "look at the knife in my pocket" shiny heat score clips, so this will actually get some pocket time. If i wanted Liberace sticking out of my pocket i'd wear sequins on my teeth.

Hi Roger,WireEdge Roger wrote:Sal - are you just keeping the hidden area of the tang dry to prevent corrosion? I think that's my plan.
Clean and dry like a wound. It's easier in some places like Colorado, but rinse, dry, I leave mine open at times just so air can get to all of the parts. It's a lot like Cruwear in mtc.

Re: 52100 Military, what are your plans?
I dripped a liberal amount of Tuf Glide into the pivot area and along the outer edge of the tang, and then used a q-tip to wipe it along the sides of the tang up to the edge of the plunge line, then let the blade patina. It's coming along nicely.
