I never knew that the forum knife or that " forum knives " were a thing that ever existed before yesterday, and I thought even the lurkers could get the knives.

Yes, it seems even lurkers can get the knives. As of right now, Spyderco has not placed any sort of restrictions on participation or anything like that, so it would seem to be fair game.

The point is that a forum knife (or special forum anything) is usually intended as a way of saying thanks to all the people who participate in the forum, as no forum would exist if nobody participated. So some people are understandably annoyed that the people who don't contribute at all, or very little, may get this "reward" while some of those who spend a great deal of time answering questions, forming friendships, reading, and generally interacting may miss out if the supply is too small. To some, the knife isn't just a cool knife, but represents the countless hours that they've invested into the forum. I don't really agree with some of the harshness I've seen, but I understand where their frustration comes from.

Hopefully there will be plenty of knives to go around, so regular contributors, lurkers, casual posters, that one kid next door, my uncle's dog and my grandma can all get a knife directly from Spyderco at a decent price. I was going to get two, but think I'll just pick up one, as I don't need the extra and I'm sure someone else would like to have the chance to buy it.

Seems like the Green Para2 and the Green Native will be coming out around the same time. Do you think they'll use the same color green aside from the crosshatch that the Native is getting ?

The South Fork, Para2, and Native should make a nice set of green knives.

Just imagined them both coming the same day-would feel like christmas and birthday.

You find it at KW homepage (listed as pre-order item) as it is an exclusive for them.

Great comments and you're a good man jabba, but here's the deal.
If your Uncle's dog gets a forum knife then my boy Spike should get one.

jabba,
I agree with you completely. And hope that there will be enough knives for everybody and not too many, so Spyderco would stuck with them like with USN Catcherman. IIRC it took few month to sell the stock. Also I started to appreciate much more distribution system of 2005 and 2006 knives, unfortunately it was too time consuming for Kristi and she is wearing too many hats already.

It sold out as a pre-order.

My guess is a lot were bought to flip so you'll see them on the secondary market when they ship. But at a premium.

Of course, I guess there's always the possibility of a second run. That's happened with dealer exclusives in the past, to mixed reviews. Guys who just wanted he knife were happy. Those who bought them to make a profit on the secondary market were angry. I side with the first group.

Whenever I see something like this happen, it actually makes me a bit giddy with joy. I've bought and re-sold knives before, but to make it such a massive focus of your life that you are angry if a knife is re-released so that more knife-buying fans can have one, because it could cut into your profit margins, is the very definition of self-centered greed. Anything that upsets those sorts of people is a big win, in my book.

I don't really mind people flipping knives, but when they expect a company to cater to them specifically, at the expense of regular customers who just want a quality tool to own...

I'm with you. I don't mind any additional runs of "special" knives because I buy a knife to use. More runs does not make my knife any less special in how it performs and it might even give me a chance to get another one as backup if I find that I really like the knife.

As a casual forum lurker/poster, I hope Spyderco makes the right call and ensures that forum regulars (and they know who you are) get these knives. If there are enough left over I'd like to have one too, but I understand the purpose of a forum knife and won't be devastated if I don't get one. All good. They do look COOL!

I think it is possible to spend hours and hours on the forum without posting. Some people are a little more shy about posting, and some people will respond to every thread just to hear their keyboard clicking.

I made sure I actually knew something about Spyderco knives before I posted anything... I never had to ask any questions because searching the forum always had a wealth of information. The forum actually seemed really friendly until the forum knife was introduced. Funny how limited edition anything does that!

I do agree that I hope there is enough to go around, and people who buy things just to flip them are no fun... I see it a lot with Para2s right now. People buy them whenever they pop up at regular price just to make a couple of bucks on Ebay.

Thanks for the information man, and they told me they put me on a back up list, but that they have only had a few cancellations and they have about 100 people just on the back up list, haha.

Who knows? Orange para jumped to $200 right away. Most likely you will be able to find on BF for little less.

There have been some blue and orange paras going for $300 on BF recently. I would suspect the green ones would be in the same ballpark given the long wait and anticipation.

We can only guess. eBay flipped green Para2 prices would probably start at $200 as Roman said, but I'd guess $250 will be not uncommon. Just guessin'...
