Jeff's cool. He has some great stories.RustyIron wrote: ↑Thu Nov 13, 2025 10:47 pm
Like so many other online retailers, one of the places I order mountain bike parts offers a variety of shipping options. They offer the usual free shipping with a minimum order. There's also expedited shipping for a little more. The last option is "Hand Delivery by Jeff (owner of the company)." That option is an additional $1000. I expect that time, plane tickets, hotels, and car rental would cost a lot more than that, but it's a funny joke nevertheless. Or maybe Jeff expects you to pick him up at the airport, put him up in your spare bedroom, and feed him.

Yup. I never buy knives from ebay or Amazon or any other "shady" website. AD all the way!Danke wrote: ↑Mon Nov 10, 2025 3:40 pmWhy? Because all those pictures are feedback for the counterfeiters on what they're doing wrong.
Coaching them on how to improve wouldn't be prudent.
They provide you with a wide range of authorized dealers. Don't search for deals on Amazon or eBay and stick to the ADs.
But there's the old adage, you can lead a horse to water but you cannot make it drink. Some people will stubbornly keep the fakers in business.
Re: Why doesn't Spyderco help us avoid fakes?
It seems like people are trying to buy old exclusives and sprints not worried about the new ones. They are paranoid to get ripped off on eBay and such. They seem to want Spyderco to have a way to determine what is a counterfeit but that’s almost impossible. The only way to determine is to know Spyderco knives like the back of your hand or take a chance and hope it’s legit.

Looks like the OP did the typical...sign up, make a post crying, and then never come back. Get a lot of that lately for some reason.

Re: Why doesn't Spyderco help us avoid fakes?
I do appreciate when they stick around (more the merrier and all), but a tell seems to be sort of an angsty/frustrated attitude right off the bat. I'm sure whatever situation they are dealing with may be frustrating, but sometimes there is no easy button.
If that person is still watching this thread, I encourage you to do the hard work (actually not that hard) - stick around, start learning, talk to people, research, etc. Then find a model you really like, and start studying it. Find if there are known fakes of it, then study both the real one and the fake one and soon you will get smart enough to tell.
Example: I really like the Vallotton. They make fakes of it. After researching both side-by-side, it is no longer hard to tell which one is the fake and which is real. The fake one has some obvious anomalies once you get even vaguely familiar w/ the model, not to mention the shoddy quality evident from photos.

Agreed 1000 percent.
Spyderco and their team have gone above and beyond to do what can be done to stop counterfeits.
If people would stop spending money on counterfeits the criminals who produce and sell them would have noone to buy them.

Can he hopefully get a refund and then buy the genuine knife from a genuine retailer?

It's hard to believe that someone will actually lie to you to get your money.

If people didn’t buy the fakes, they wouldn’t be made. Don’t blame Spyderco, blame the clowns, fools and charlatans who buy all the knock-offs.
Re: Why doesn't Spyderco help us avoid fakes?
Seller lied it's genuine, older production, it was purchased on allegro platform, it's like Polish ebay. He can always adres it to service. It was pretty obvious clone for someone who saw original. Honestly it's not my problem anyway, I just gave him a hint it's clone, because he has posted it on Facebook group. His chances are low but not 0. Will see.SpyderEdgeForever wrote: ↑Wed Nov 19, 2025 10:13 amCan he hopefully get a refund and then buy the genuine knife from a genuine retailer?

The kids these days call it "Matching Energy". Come on and act like a clown, expect a pie in the face. Come on and show respect, get respect back.

Hi Cabfrank,
I must admit that I've seen that leaning as well. One of our Happy Thoughts coins says; "if you want a better world, be a better person". So really, it's up to you me and the other great folks here to keep it friendly.
We're getting a lot of new folks here lately. Most forums are not as friendly as ours. I guess there is a learning curve?

It's hard for me to be friendly when they open with a tantrum.

You just have to be the better person.

The Friend/Foe lists help, too.
And yes, Sal, I agree. I've added quite a few to the Foe list of late. Still the best forum I've ever participated in, and I'm old enough to remember when there was no internet.

Yes it is definitely still a great forum. I often find sal's words of wisdom inspiring, this time included.
Re: Why doesn't Spyderco help us avoid fakes?
I keep seeing this thread title pop up, and I've hesitated to post this because I'm really not trying to sound like a prick but...why is it the company's fault that people can't tell a fake from the real thing? How does this responsibly fall to the maker to figure out?
I was recently duped on a knife from another brand, by a very convincing fake (and also my own lack of research on how to spot takes). It never once occurred to me to blame the maker for my getting scammed. I just can't wrap my head around that, I don't see the connection between a manufacturer being responsible for what China are doing. And I know I'm about to sound like the old cranky dude but really it's this weird mentality "these days" where nobody wants to take accountability for their own actions and decisions.

@cabfrank I enjoy reading everyone's posts. They are just ideas. But I find it hilarious that you are saying that the forum is not as friendly as it used to be when you say it to TKO or Mushroom.
There have been entire threads attacking SEF. I get bashed a few times a month. But hey, if forumites love the gatekeepers of TKO and Mushroom, they would have a different perspective.
Take this thread for instance:
