What does everyone think about a lightweight, compact Spyderco hori hori? It feels kind of out of left field but a lightweight, ergonomic small hori hori in a salt steel would be awfully neat. I’ve always felt that the 7” or so models I’ve used before were a little big and clunky - a 5 or 4 inch FRN handled hori hori could be a really great tool. It’s probably too far out of the box to be practical from a business perspective but it would be fun! I’d buy one.
I'd love to see a Spyderco version of the A.G. Russell Woodswalker. Prior to getting a custom little fixed blade that uses utility blades, the Woodswalker was my around the house beater knife. Mine is an older version using AUS8 steel *I think*. An outdoor instructor I respected used one as a neck knife. I like the design enough I had a knife maker friend make a fancy one with wood scales & 154CM steel. Only thing he missed in the design was making the blade thicker.
I like the idea of that blade there. The neck of the handle gets a bit narrow, but it looks like it would make a nice fixed EDC. Would you be able to share the dimensions?

Since you brought A G Russell up I second that and add this. Russell and his wife Goldie made a positive impact on many of us and if achievable another good one would be if Spyderco can do a collaboration with the company to make an updated Spyderized version of the AG Russell/Blackie Collins Deer Hunter fixed blade.
I really do like the thought of a Frontier Valley type / style fixed blade, but if I’m being honest I’d rather have something more along the lines of this LT Wright Next Gen. In any steel that Spyderco sees fit to use, as long as it’s Cru-wear! No, seriously any steel, tool or stainless. This is a 7.5” OAL knife with a 3” blade, I’d be good with a 7” OAL, 3” blade and a 4” handle.

I’d like to try a Next Gen.
I have two similar Bark Rivers (ULB and Bushcraft Scout). The Next Gen is right in between.
I think I’d need a particular sheath setup in order to carry anything in this size range as an edc.
The Frontier Valley sees more use as an edc primarily due to the delta leather sheath I got for it. That and the shorter length mean I can carry it just behind my right hip and it stays out of sight until I need it.
I'm happiest with Micarta and Tool Steel.

Alas the Fish Hunter is not double edged, and the handle design is not symmetrical, so you can't swap between SE/PE with equal ergonomics.
The Duct Knife, you just flip the handle over to switch edges based on materials.
Just need a higher quality version by Spyderco, ideally with a more aggressive hollow grind to try and maximize cutting performance within the limitations of a double edged blade profile.
A variation with a broader leaf dagger, like a throwing knife or Smatchet, would be even better, as the extended curved out edge would greatly improve the ability for draw cuts on flat material using SE.
The goal is that with the broader leaf dagger you get some cutting edge ahead of your knuckles, similar to a folder with a negative blade angle. Spydercos throwing knives had a similar blade shape albeit a bit less exaggerated.
Something akin to the Boker Mini Smatchet (5.5") with the guard redone so that it forms two mirrored thumb ramps ala Spyderco folder, with one edge SE, one PE, and the blade aggressively hollow ground to maximize cutting performance.
How about a lightweight Zoomer? Could be a smaller version. Kydex sheath and CF handles. Magnacut for corrosion free.
Fireman, first, thank you for your service. Second, what features would you want on a dedicated fire fighting fixed blade knife? In my off the cuff thoughts I'd say it should have a combo edge or full serrated edge and have pry bar capacity and carbide glass breaker butt tip. Maybe one solid piece of convex ground Lc200N with satin finish and FRN grips.

The double/both edge fixed blade has come up before and someone (sorry I forget who) did a great sketch of one that is curved on the plain edge side and straight like a wharncliffe on the serrated side but had a handle shape that is neutral enough to be held either way and feel right. It would need a reverse hourglass shaped handle like a lot of daggers have.
Would love a fixed blade around 3 - 5 inches with a hollow grind and thin blade thickness. Most of my fixed blade knives are thick except for the mules but they’re short like a PSK. I have a CPM 10V fixed blade that is very thin and I like the way it slices.
Would also love an EDC that is around 2.5 inches not very tall, thin, hollow ground, flat edge/no belly and CRU-WEAR/PD#1. Could be Wharncliffe or modified sheep foot.
Definitely want a hollow ground tanto or reverse tanto.
The handles for these knives would be full 4 finger grip. Preferably tool steel for each one.

EDC fixed blade - visiting city so no big knives or fixed blades, sigh

Thanks I have come up with a knife for Wildland firefighting that I hope Sal still wants to make once the Golden expansion back log production is all out of the way. I have designed a fixed blade for structural firefighting but that’s another story and already exists.

Mark can they make a single edged version to get arround the anti dagger laws?
Unfortunately the whole point of it is that one side is serrated and one side is plain edge, to provide a '2 knives in one' capability similar to the folding Dyad.
But thats also how it could plausibly get around any 'weapon' category, as by having two separate edge styles it's not so much a double edged dagger as it is a "Dual Edge utility knife" - which is in fact what a Duct Knife is (and how they are sold at most hardware stores).
The style of blade is also used in diving and spear fishing:
Literally every major and most small knife brands are selling double edged, tactical daggers ( even anti knife capital UK still produces FS daggers). I don't see why Spyderco would have any issues with a Dual Edge utility knife.

I had the same idea awhile back for a Spyderco Bayonet, based on that asymmetrical dual edge shape. (Spyderco Asymmetric would be a good name).
The short, serrated side is the bayonet side, in a narrow straight profile so as to fit below the barrel. The PE part would be larger to allow a deeper hollow grind to serve as a good utility / slicing edge.
Incredibly awful 2 minute sketch of the concept:
For non-bayonet use though I think the broad dual edge leaf profile of the Smatchet / throwing knife blade makes more sense.
