2022 P.I.T.S Sprint!
Re: 2022 P.I.T.S Sprint!
So that one is 200€ if I am not mistaken - with a traditional back spring design. PITS has the spring directly machined into the frame what means that you have to take your (tolerances) budget and make sure that all the components from the production fir it, because you have no possibility to fine tune it - and if you are out of the budget, then you quickly end up with the pring not engaging properly.
Again - what I wrote above is by itself not a proof that the (considerably higher) price is explained by the construction of the knife, but possibly a hint that it is at least a part of it.

In terms of quality you’ll be hard pressed to top CRK and LionSteel. In the 6 years before the Covid pandemic (2014-2019) they each won the Blade Show Manufacturing Quality Award 3 times.
Right now, Lamnia sells the Lionsteel Thrill Titanium M390 for €213.87 incl. VAT 20% and lists the old Spyderco PITS Titanium N690 for €314.52 incl. VAT 20%.
I believe the Spyderco PITS is made by Fox Knives also of Maniago, Italy and a high-quality knife maker.

Other than being slip joints made in Italy, the Thrill and the PITS are very different knives. If you guys love the Thrill so much, buy them and discuss them in the Off Topic area. Lots of us chat about other brands over there. I have lots of slip joints, but I'm not cluttering the thread up discussing them here.

Re: 2022 P.I.T.S Sprint!
I haven't tried the Thrill (sorry, JR), but I have been very pleased with the 'modern slip joint' knives I have from Maniago. I have slip joints from MKM (which is an umbrella organization of the manufacturers there), Fox, Viper, and Lionsteel. I also own two PITS. If the PITS is made by any of the MKM partners (and I believe it was made by Fox last time) then I'm sure the quality will be good.

Re: 2022 P.I.T.S Sprint!
the pits is not a good looking knife, in my opinion. i don't really like holes in the handle at all and i think the blade shape looks like someone messed up grinding the edge. however, i personally think most spydercos are pretty ugly (function over form, which is fine... i'm here for a reason) and that's part of why i like them. some have grown on me and i think they're beautiful now. i'm sure the pits would be the same for me after having it in hand. what's compelling to me is the design of the springbar and the materials used.
but when i see there are cheaper options that actually look nice (without having to experience it firsthand and let it grow on me) with the same materials and very similar design elements, it's hard not to take notice and talk about it. maybe it's off topic because it's not about a spyderco knife, but it's at least related. i mean we're not talking about pro wrestling in the middle of a discussion about the pits sprint.

Re: 2022 P.I.T.S Sprint!
I’m looking forward to this release! Being a lefty, I appreciate the reversible clip and the distinct look of this model is appealing.
Re: 2022 P.I.T.S Sprint!
I think it's a gorgeous folder, with my only nitpick being that bit of beard on the blade towards the tang making a near recurve. I have no legal restrictions to worry about but I think it's a very interesting design. The price is high, as are all prices these days but I will get one. If I am forced to go to some forsaken place with lock restrictions I suppose it will come in handy.
Re: 2022 P.I.T.S Sprint!
That would be the price if it doesn't need to be imported from the US. The Stovepipe is sold at around 500. When you see the MSRP for the PITS sprint run, it seems that we either are gonna pay approximatively the same price as for the Stovepipe.Matus wrote: ↑Thu Jun 02, 2022 6:28 amI am expecting EU price to be between 350 - 400€, a lot indeed, but surely not 500.
(still from Matus ) :
I have limited understanding for that ... I mean, Product made in EU going to an EU market, how hard can that be. Spyderco needs a branch in EU, that would most likely solve the problem. Maybe the sales volume in Europe is too small to make that a viable option. But for many of us it will push the price of this (and other) EU-made models out of reach, unfortunately. I know it is a prime example of a first world problem, but still not something to enjoy.
Spyderco has a foot in Spain though, if I recall correctly. If they manage to get this product to EU dealers from a EU country, the price would be way more easy on the wallet. I have no Issue spending 300€ for it.
I think EU numbers for Spyderco must be very good, because there's never many models in stock at the biggest dealers !

Re: 2022 P.I.T.S Sprint!
Stovepipe sells for $420 in US and sells for around 480€, the Pits is going to cost $280, so it could sell for 350€ or a bit less (probably more than 300€ though). We shall not forget, that the knives made in EU, but sold to US are going out without the taxt, while the EU does pay it, so we are always going to be paying more € than our US friends are paying in $ (since the € is not particularly strong these days).
Spyderco knives are often sold out around EU shops, but part of the reason is, that the shops can not dictate how many pieces they get. They order certain amounts, but Spyderco decides how many they actually get.

Re: 2022 P.I.T.S Sprint!
Pricey, but really only 5 cents more than the original version's msrp. This one is more special with the steel and finishing.
Re: 2022 P.I.T.S Sprint!
While the MSRP of the new and old PITS may be the same the street price of the old one from 2015 was about $200-$220 since there was no MAP enforcement.

Re: 2022 P.I.T.S Sprint!
Thanks for the information about orders and EU shops. I must have scrambled my prices because I thought the Stovepipe and PITS MSRPs were the same, I don't know what happened to my brain ! Something bad, most certainly.Matus wrote: ↑Sat Jun 04, 2022 2:08 pmStovepipe sells for $420 in US and sells for around 480€, the Pits is going to cost $280, so it could sell for 350€ or a bit less (probably more than 300€ though). I guesstimate a 373 euro price. Unless the dollar keeps getting stronger.Ramonade wrote: ↑Wed Jun 01, 2022 12:04 pmYeah, I might have the sell Dan's cat for this...
I think that the Mules will take priority, depending on the dates of each releases.
But it's really cool the sprint is coming ! If it's like the Stovepipe, it'll be around 500€ in EU, at this price I'd actually have to sell my cat too![]()

I'm just now noticing the 1/4" of wasted space in the ricasso...it seems completely unnecessary and would be much more appealing if it angled all the way back to the guard.

Well, looking for an explanation led me to user subwoofer's extremely thorough review from 2015 - Review: The Spyderco PITS Folder. In the review he explains that from the tip, following the curved edge of the blade, the cutting edge is stopped at exactly 3" to keep it UK legal, thus leaving the giant ricasso...
Great design and an excellent review that I had never seen before, but the whole UK legal thing is becoming much less appealing, LOL! Maybe a regrind is in order for the PITS...I don't really know.
I highly recommend subwoofer's review for anyone interested in the history or the design of PITS.

I love the design despite not being made for my market, despite the riccaso, despite the holes, despite no lock, despite the naysayers, despite the price. Sometimes a design just feels “right” even though it is not perfect. This one feels “right” to me.
