Re: Knife lubricant
I have been using mineral oil for years. There may be better lubes but mineral oil has always worked perfectly fine for me. I always have a big bottle on hand for my cutting board anyway and the stuff is dirt cheap.

Best thing on reel drags is lanolin grease. Live tropical so need a grease that doesn't melt in the heatBloke wrote:Your question pricked my curiosity D so I had a look on the Inox web page for a MSDS and basically all it said is 'a refined mineral oil'. Used in Butcher shops for lubricant on meat mincer,s and band saws. Works a treat and food safe
Comes in a spray can like WD-40
Something I haven't tried on a pivot and trust washers yet but I will, that rates a mention is Inox mx6, food grade, clay based, extreme pressure, high temperature grease. One of our fishing reel gurus here recommended it when I upgraded a reel's drag washers from felt to carbontex. Early days but so far so good.
I don't know if it's available in the US but you can pick up a 30g tube for around $10.00 here. I know you tinker and pull knives apart so If you want to give it a whirl and can't get it there PM me and I'll send you some. :)
Im a vegetarian as technically cows are made of grass and water.

i like superlube full synthetic. also a huge fan of mobil-1 15 w 50 for guns and knives. best oil you can buy

Thanks for the heads up Standy. :)standy99 wrote:Best thing on reel drags is lanolin grease. Live tropical so need a grease that doesn't melt in the heat.
I'll give it a go as long as it doesn't attract Kiwis trying to interfere with my reel. :p

Re: Knife lubricant
Where are all of these "nano-tech" lubes I've heard that would make all the lubes we have now obsolete? And I heard that propaganda at least 4 years ago but I've yet to hear of even one that has made a dent in the market place
I'm still standing by good ol' Militec. Also that grease of theirs has a lubricity all it's own. With all the firearms afis loving Militec so much you just know it's got to be great stuff. Heck 10 years ago the guys selling it at the Gun Show here in KC were always selling out of the stuff
Like I said before if I find anything that beats out Militec by a noticeable difference I'll switch immediately.

I've got a tube of Boker 'Knife Oil'. It was marketed as safe/non-toxic -- danged if I know if they just put mineral oil in there -- but it's clear, odorless, and the fine applicator tip on the tube (really, the primary reason I got it) is handy for precisely dispensing oil into pivots (and other small areas).

Re: Knife lubricant
Has anyone tried Breakthrough Technologies HP100 knife oil with SMT? I can’t find a review anywhere. I recently purchased a Tops Folder and this lube came with it. Says shake before using. Anyone have info on it??

Re: Knife lubricant
Victorinox multi tool oil works fine for me
Re: Knife lubricant
If you want something that inhibits rust, Ballistol, CLP, or FP10.
If you are concerned with contaminating food you cut, you might be using too much.

Re: Knife lubricant
Been using FP-10 since I got into folding blades. It was what I had on hand at the time. Never any issues with rust, and pretty nice actions.
Re: Knife lubricant
Nano-oil and ballistol. Ballistol is foodgrade as well.
Re: Knife lubricant
I've settled with KPL and KPL heavy. I can't complain.
Interflon Fin Super is fantastic too, just the application (spray) not not practical for knives.

Re: Knife lubricant
I’ve got Nano-oil 10w as the Shabazz suggested, benchmade Blue Lube, Lucas Extreme Duty Gun Oil, and that Breakthrough Technologies Hp-100 with SMT. I just wish I knew more about the Sciencey part of it so I could understand what they’re going for. I’ve been sticking to nano oil but I got the HP-100 in a Tops MSF 4.0 so figured I’d see if anyone had info.
Re: Knife lubricant
I have been using "Reel Butter" on my pivots for a few years now and have no complaints at all. Any sort of quality fishing reel oil would be pretty similar I would imagine. Reel butter is just what was in stock when I was purchasing and I don't imagine I will run out any time soon.
So it goes.
Re: Knife lubricant
KPL on pivots, Ballistol on blades.
Re: Knife lubricant
I've been using mineral oil for several years but am trying KPL & KPL Heavy recently. Anybody know any rationale for using KPL, pros or cons, etc? I thought it might work with a little less friction than mineral oil, just guessing, very difficult to tell. (I tried the Heavy on a ball bearing lock with a faint click, and it helped some.)
K-390 on hand: Mule Team 17, Police 4 G-10, Endela (burlap micarta), Endela backup, Endura (canvas micarta), Straight Stretch (now blade-swapped with G-10 Stretch), Delica Wharncliffe, Dragonfly Wharncliffe, & Dragonfly Wharncliffe shorty mod

Re: Knife lubricant
I've used Ballistol for a number of different uses over the years. I particularly find Ballistol great for G-10 handles. It literally rejuvenates G-10 and makes it look brand new in many cases. I've also found Ballistol great for many different cleaning jobs where any kind of water moisture is not desirable.5-by-5 wrote: ↑Sat Feb 03, 2018 8:19 pmI've used ballistol for guns and knives for at least 25 years. Interesting history and very useful properties.

However to this day I've yet to find any type of lubricant to work better on knives than Millitec. I've used Millitec since 2005 and I've had great luck with it. If they ever come up with anything better I'll switch immediately.
Re: Knife lubricant
I've heard of that>> I wonder who makes it and I also wonder what type of lube it is? I'm sure if Victorinox puts their seal of approval on it then I'm certain it's good stuff.

Re: Knife lubricant
Another +1 for Nano-Oil, 5wt for the PB washers and 10wt for the rubbing surfaces in back locks and on ball detent surfaces. I have used many other manuf. and nothing slicks up Spyderco knives like Nano-Oil. The carrier evaporates and leaves a nice dry film on the steel.
