Chris Reeve small Sebenza 21. Still carry it occasionally.
Re: What was the last knife you carried before buying your first Spyderco?
I tried a bunch of different brands before finally trying Spyderco.
My most carried knife was the Benchmade 707. Then I had a handful of others that I would often rotate in - an Ontario Rat 2, a CRKT M4 Stag, a Kershaw OD-2, a Kershaw Chill, and a SOG Zoom. I also kept a Cold Steel Micro Recon 1 on my keys and would use a Mini Recon 1 for yard chores and anything I thought would be "hard use." I put a lot of faith in the triad lock.
At some point later in the mix of things I got a Spyderco Chaparral but it didn't quite dethrone my Benchmade, it just became part of the rotation.
The Benchmade 707 Sequel in Combo Edge saw a LOT of pocket time, until it had a run in with the wheel of a forklift. Broke the tip and skewed the scales vertically. Never bothered sending it to Benchmade, I just retired it and replaced it with the Chaparral! :spyder: Haven't purchased any other brand since. (minus a couple Moraknivs and an Esee)

SAK and a Gerber hunting knife when I was outdoors. Spyderco was really my introduction to quality folders. My first Spyderco knife was a Phoenix I think ... actually no it was a CF Caly.
Here is the Gerber, from the days when Gerber made quality knives.

Kershaw whirlwind.

Mini Covert, 3.5" cutting edge. I think I got it in 1994. $120.

Kershaw OD-1. Action is smooth as ****. The only reason I don't carry it is because of the liner lock. That knife made me hate liner locks. Still sitting in my top drawer, pretty as the day I got it.

I carried some gas station knife that I still have. I didn't know what a decent knife was until I got my first Endura 4
Re: What was the last knife you carried before buying your first Spyderco?
Mostly I carried a Tinker SAK (Victorinox). I also carried a Puma Deer Hunter (1980 vintage) occasionally as my only locking folder until my first Spyderco. I still have both; the Puma is a beautiful object, but very heavy.

Benchmade Mini Dejavoo, good knife, but a very weak detent made me sell it.
Before that I carried a SAK Pioneer for a decade as my only knife. Shortly after I started carrying Spydercos it made its way back into my left front pocket - I just missed having that swiss army knife functionality too much. It is still there, as we speak.

An HK branded Benchmade made by Emerson. I’ll probably never own another tanto style blade shape again!
Re: What was the last knife you carried before buying your first Spyderco?
Buck 110, I have had this knife for 35 years

This is a great thread. Interesting how many similar answers are coming up. Lots carried Benchmades, quite a few Leeks or other Kersahws and some SAKs. Not overly surprising really. All good gateway knives. :)

BM Griptilian and Emerson Traveler (Japanese made variant).
Native kicked out Emerson. Later Adventura kicked out grip. Than Persian kicked out Native and Caly kicked out Adventura. Than both Persian and caly stocked in my pockets for more than 10 years. Caly is still there. Just used it during my lunch.

Don't remember the model but it was a Kershaw. It had stainless liners with stainless scales. The stainless scales had pakkawood maybe? inlayed into them. The knife sported roughly a 2.75-3" blade. Had it since my late teens. In 1996/97'ish I purchased my first Delica (still have it) . Since then its been 90% Spyderco when I reach for a knife to carry.

SAKs since childhood, then added inexpensive Chinese folders to the mix, upped to Cold Steels and finally fell through the Spydiehole

Re: What was the last knife you carried before buying your first Spyderco?
Funny, I started to say the same but it technically wasn't the last I'd carried before Spyderco. I bought one of these in the early 80's had black scales. Used it heavily and dressed a number of deer with it. Years later I forgot and left the knife on the tailgate of my truck and found it on the pavement with the scales broken on one side. I returned it to Buck for repair and they said not possible as scales were long gone. They replaced the knife with a new one. Came very sharp in the box. It's good that other knife companies also stand behind their knives. Still have the replacement 110 but rarely gets carried because of the weight. Kudo's to Buck.sn0wman72 wrote:Buck 110, I have had this knife for 35 years

SAKs one after another until the Delica 4.
