/ Now can anyone tell already if there is a noticeable difference in handle material between Roadie and Roadie XL? (Cause Spyderco states "plastic" with the latter instead of "FRN").
@Wartstein According to the box label it is FRN. It feels exactly like the smaller roadie to me.
Thanks!
Not that it would matter much practically speaking, but it is still Interesting that Spyderco calls the handle material specifically "plastic"on their site, while with I guess every other FRN knife it is, well, "FRN"... https://www.spyderco.com/catalog/details/C267BK/2596
Top three going by pocket-time (update April 25):
- EDC: Endela SE (K390). Endura thin red line ffg combo edge (VG10), Chaparral SE (CTS XHP)
- Mountains/outdoors: Pac.Salt 2 SE (LC200N), Salt 2 SE (LC200N), Endela SE (K390)
Not exactly the type of knife that usually could even pique my interest, but after looking at this thread and closer at the Roadie XL, it actually does...
it's funny that this knife didn't jump off the page at me considering i've been looking for a small, traditional folder for a while now. i've been considering the rough ryder reserve quillcliffe, and still may get it, but this is kind of like a spyderco take on a modern version of that style of knife and now that i see it that way, it's a very compelling design to me. a steel i don't have yet also helps.

Yeah, this and the new G10 Grasshopper are appealing to me because I like a small pocket knife to always carry with me.

Yes, to me at first glance the Roadie XL did not look like a model that could interest me... but now I think it is a really useful design in its niche: Light, superslim carry, still just enough cutting edge to get some work done, and I also like the very "unusual" looks... kind of reminds me of when I first came across Spyderco in general and found their models to look "different" to what I considered to be a "cool looking" knife back then.
And of course I like that M398 is an Austrian (my homecountry) steel...
Though I have to say I am not superimpressed with its qualities from what I just read (https://knifesteelnerds.com/2020/10/26/ ... -and-more/) - very low toughness at not even too high hardness for example (Even ZDP189 is tougher, despite being run a lot harder).Should not be an issue though for what I'd use the Roadie XL.

Couldn't wait for Black Friday. I just received my Roadie XL yesterday and I'm pleased as punch with it. Love the blade shape with just a hint of belly, and the handle is generously sized. The opening action is reminiscent of the UKPK, so very good. Not quite as positive when closing to the half stop, but not bad by any means, and getting better with use. I had to put more effort into getting the edge where I wanted than I expected. But the grind was nice and even and I'm looking forward to seeing how M398 performs. Gonna need a couple more in red and blue Sal...
I'd like to see some pictures of this in the wild.

Hello everyone!
I live in Eastern European country and have just made order of "Spyderco roadie m398" knife for 120$ in our local well-known store with good reputation and no fake knives in their assortment
But know I don't really know))
The subject of my question is: what is that knife, the I have just bought? On the web-site of the store it is called "Spyderco roadie m398 c189pbk. And, as you can see on attached photos - it is a SMALL roadie, NOT XL
I have done some researches and have found no information about production of m398 regular roadie model.
Spyderco have just came out with roadie XL with m398 as blade material, but it's not small and have a clip.
Please, tell me if you know anything about production of this model or if you know that there were any fake roadies with m398 mark.
From memory, the Black scaled version of the regular Roadie is, indeed, M398. The other scaled versions are N690. Somebody will be along to correct me if I’ve gotten that wrong.

Yes, but it's true only for 2024 catalog, in which black regular (small) roadie has m398 steel, but I didn't find any information about this roadie beeing produced. Older versions of black regular roadie have n690 steel, as like as other clolored roadies

Welcome darkdisq. The knife pictured in your post is the XL.
No, it's regular roadie photo. As you can see, it has not got holes for clip on it's scales. Also, XL roadie has only one screw at the end of handle, that suppoose to hold the clip. This roadie on photo has two pins at the end of handle, like all other small roadies.
BTW, my friend who lives in the city, where that store is located, visited it and confirmed, that it's really a small roadie with m398 in that store, that i'm waiting to be delivered. Now I'm finally confused...
MB Italian factory decided not to wait Spyderco's approval and came out with m398 roadie for local stores?

I think your right. Wasn't it announced in the same reveal (13?) with the Urban moving to m398 that the Roadie would also be getting the steel upgrade. Most of the other colors were disco'd last year so that would check out as well that only the black would be making it's way out into the wild with m398 while everything else is new old stock.
Can the Roadie XL be disassembled? The center pin doesn't appear to have a screw head like the pivot screw and clip screw.
I always disassemble once I used them a bit to see the most interesting thing to me : the guts. And I did not manage to remove the pivot screw. Loctite is keeping it together and there's no D shape (I would've felt it if I ruined the D hole, done that once or twice on UKPKs )
I could bring a soldering iron to it and see what's what but I decided to not bother. Especially since I pretty much can imagine the insides, from the notch and what's between the scales
In the collection : Lots of different steels, in lots of different (and same) Spydercos.

This looks to be the standard Roadie. It is very small and is rounded instead of having a pointed tip. The Roadie XL is as long as the Chaparral, but much slimmer and has a pointed tip.
