I do a lot of of surf fishing in summer and was considering getting something in H1. Have only heard good things about it.

How's the fishing up your way if you don't mind me asking?
I have been catching mostly Seatrout this week and filling the freezer. It has been unusually hot this year. Normally I would be fishing for 15-50 pound (baby tarpon) and Redfish this time of the year but they have been tough to find. Have been doing a lot of shark fishing on the flats and doing well with Lemons. Bull, and Sandbar sharks.
Sounds awesome. It's Winter here, and a lot colder than usual. We don't get tarpon here but 50lb is big. I've caught most species along the coast but usually undersized. I catch and release but it's still good fun.

Utility for sure most of the time. Most of my use happens at work and involves cutting cardboard, electrical tape, zip ties, cutting plastic jacket material off of grounding and coaxial cables, opening plastic packaging, cutting landscaping cloth, trimming edges of hard plastic, cutting rope, scraping things off of surfaces, and lots of other miscellaneous tasks one can find on a construction site. They also get some use around the acreage doing lots of similar tasks, and lots of uses at home opening mail etc. The kitchen knives are also superb in the kitchen. I have a few I don't really use often and only seldom carry if I'm going to a special function where I don't expect to use them but don't want to be without a knife...some would be really hard to replace and are quite cool to have in my collection. So I guess a little bit of everything for me. I don't plan to sell any of mine soon (Not sitting on any for the purpose of an investment), but if I needed some money I have some I could certainly sell to help me out of a bind. Hopefully it won't come to that though and I can continue to enjoy them as well as the ones to come in the future.

I see your location as S. Africa. Colder than usual there; assuming that's an odd weather pattern. What do you catch on that coast? Any Bluefish there? I have to figure out how to post pics here.

I'm in Durban, on the east coast. It's usually quite tropical but the weather seems broken. We get Bluefish here but only during season. We call them shad. We also get Kob which is like a mud salmon. Excellent fighters. We're lucky to have the Durban harbor and a bunch of rivers and dams too. I usually go spinning or try dropshot around these places. I'll also try post a few pics once I figure out how.

Your the first guy who's mentioned scraping stuff. Thought it was just me. I have huge hands and I find that if I hold a Spyderco in an almost pen like grip with one thumb over the hole I have lots of control for scraping and other fine work.

Probably not the right place to post this but here's Durban. The fishing here is usually insane

i just like cutting stuff and cut anything I can. I cut anything that needs cutting in an office environment and anything that needs cutting on a Naval base. I probably cut stuff that doesn't need cutting and I sometimes think it would be good fun to cut mooring lines and hawsers especially under tension but I'd probably get into trouble if I did. :) I hunt and fish and I like a pointy stick. I like to whittle balls in cages and I have various bald spots on my left arm and thighs.

I use my knives when fishing on my kayak and when cleaning fish back on shore and preparing them in the kitchen. Those are the most "real" uses I put them through. The rest is edc stuff like cutting string off my shorts, cleaning under my fingernails and opening envelopes. But hey, I still need a quality knife for those tasks too...maybe even 20 quality knives!! ;)

My landlord was in the Royal Navy for over 50yrs. Retired as warrant officer. I actually trespass on Navy land to get to my favorite fishing spot.

Pointy sticks are good. When I head into the Bush I usually carry a staff with a sharp end. Extremely useful

Funny you mentioned kayak fishing. I gave my kayak away to my dad about a month ago because of the plate in my wrist. Really miss it. Nice catch in your avi dude. What species is that?

I used to have a little 6' 6" graphite spin stick at work and throw 28g lures at lunch time but after 911 they stopped us fishing. I don't know why but they did.

Same here. My Old man drove cranes in the 70's and knew do many cool spots. Now most of the harbor is fenced or gated and the police will come chase you if you try fishing where you "shouldn't".

About thumb in hole. I found it very secure also, with forefinger on the spine and middle finger on the choil (if there is). This method will make the current Stretch choil not deep enough and people say not secure becomes irrelevant. IMHO.

I find this grip very stable whether I'm using my Dragonfly or PM2. I really love how both knives feel in hand just about any way I use or hold them.

I use mine for all the usual edc tasks mentioned. I cut a lot of pallet banding at work. Some days I cut 500 straps or more. I also use them to open packages and help with some light prep on my lunch break. I have a young child so cutting food up for a baby has become one of my most common edc chores. Outside of the everyday tasks my knives may encounter I am also an avid outdoorsman. I use knives while hiking, camping, hunting and fishing. I enjoy bushcraft and wilderness survival stuff so I carve a lot of wood with my knives. I process game, clean fish and cut bait a lot as well. I also enjoy sharpening as a form a meditation. I small glass of whiskey and a little sharpening is a great way for me to unwind at the end of the day and take my mind off of everything else so I would say that I use them for that too. I also just like knives and use them to give me pleasure. I enjoy admiring the design and I enjoy using them and trying to further understand the designer's design philosophy. Like most of us on here, knives are more than just tools, they are a hobby too.

That's a lot of straps to cut. Reminds me of back in the day before I carried a knife. Worked in a hardware store and always had to search for something to cut with. Design philosophy is a pretty interesting topic to get into. Recently been reading about the late Bob Loveless and how his designs impacted many other makers. Extremely interesting stuff.

Yeah, lots and lots of banding. We go through so much that we have a chopper to chop it up before going off to the recycler.
