I have few back-ups, used to have many more. But the only production knife, which I bought double, when it was in production was Caly3.5. Just saw it at great price and bought just in case, if I ever need it or my son or one of my nephews. I bought numerous back-ups for my c83 and Caly3 when they were discontinued. Sprints are possible, but sprints are not the same. Sometimes better, sometimes not.[/QUOTE]

this is true that sometimes.
I am looking forward to Shaman, but trying not to get too exited.

My top choices Natives5, Calys, C83 Persian

I say, do as you please. It isn't a bad Idea I suppose, but I don't find myself doing this.

This is a no-brainer IMHO...

If you can afford it, buy as many as you want...

Sure, you may never wear down your favorite disco'd Spyder, but what if you lose it or catastrophically break it?

Personally, I can't imagine buying a knife and burying it in a safe as insurance against a day when it might be discontinued. As much as I like some of my spydercos I don't have ANY that are irreplaceable. If one of my favorite models (like the military you mentioned) were discontinued tomorrow and I lost my only copy I would probably not be stoked, but I don't think I would lose any sleep lamenting the fact that I didn't have 3 extras under my bed. I'd just buy the next best thing and keep rolling. And like I said, something new and interesting is probably just around the corner.
Now lets say...salts were discontinued..would you buy a few just in case ;)

What with Spyderco's intriguing new offerings each year, I can't afford duplicates of the ones I buy. Besides, I haven't worn out the singles I own (and I've yet to lose any folder in over fifty years of acquiring knives). But I sure understand the back-up impulse. After all, I've got some two dozen Spydies to stand in for any one I wear out or lose, and that number grows yearly.

Too many knives and too little money to buy duplicates...

I actually have changed my mind about backups. When I first started buying Spydercos, I wanted lots of pre-need replacements for knives I liked. I underestimated the longevity of the knives.

My policy is simple: when I really like a knife I always get a couple. One for the pocket and One for Backup.
:D

That said, I don't buy anything twice. Just those that I really like can actually make it to my exclusive 'One & Backup' club.
I like that. A lot.

I buy backups for most of my Spydies... makes me feel less worried about using and messing up my user one.

Unless I can get a great deal, I normally stay away from back ups. Plenty of great knives coming from Spyderco.

The only pre need replacement I have is for my SB Caly 3.5.

So I went ahead and bought the backup knife. Got myself a brand new Bob Lum Tanto Folder in grey G-10 for a screaming deal to boot! Because there were a few scratches on the blade the colour was really off I got it for $166 :) Once I got it home I took off the pocket clip and snapped the photo below. As you can see the colour where the clip was shows how much discolouration was going on. Then I hit it with the magic eraser and bam! Good as new! I can't recommend magic erasers enough to clean up G-10.

I'll probably take some more pics later, but for right now I'm just enjoying the new score!
