My thoughts, exactly ;)

I can tell you I'd be hard pressed to spend $1,000 on ANY knife but that's more of a statement on my financial situation than anything about the knife.

That said, the perfect design, the perfect materials? Who knows? ;)

The one thing I do feel is I always get a good value from Spyderco knives. Whether that's a $45 knife or a $300 knife it's a good value. At any price level, I only have to decide

1. Do I like the knife?
2. Can I afford the knife? (rephrased as 'Do I want to spend $X on this knife?')

Both of these questions seem to fluctuate over time. Like many here, these days I find I have WAY too many knives ;) I have knives for every situation/scenario I could imagine. I have knives I absolutely LOVE that can't get ANY pocket time. I don't view myself as a collector and I don't want to acquire a knife just to stick it in a drawer.

So, how much would I spend on a random, unnamed Spyderco knife? $0!

Show me a knife, call out the materials and the specifications and we'll talk. ;)

I look at my history and can say from experience around $240. This is for things like the South Fork and the Fluted Military. Some of the reason Spyderco consistently makes my jaw drop is the price-performance ratio. I feel like these are the best value, best cutting knives I own.

How much on other knives in general? I try to buy secondhand so the inflated prices come down some, but its in the neighborhood of $400-450. When it gets that high I start looking at what else I could be getting for the money, even if its just savings. At this level, I can buy something with a lot more complexity than a knife. $450 buys quite a bit of chainsaw, which could out-cut what I carry in my pocket daily. Although you can't baton a 20" bar through a log.

Of course you can, if you have a big enough hammer ;)

(but the again, that hammer could just shatter the log, so who needs to "baton' at that point! ;) )

There was a time when it was $125.00 to $150.00 max. I think my most expensive new Spyderco is my Techno @ $170. Now I can't stop looking at the Strider PT ($300). And now that Jeremy @ Calavera Cutlery uses a thumb hole I really
want a El Patron folder in 3V ($500~) My views have slightly changed....

A follow-up question should be: How much will you admit you spent when other people ask? :D

$200, but I try to stay around the $140 mark or less.
Don't mess with the Spyder because you think you're fly.

Ha! No, that is way way more than I'd spend on a shotgun. Target fees are what gets me. I look at a Domino that I really want and figure I could shoot ~ 300 clays for the same amount of money. Since I've been into knives for 30 years but only started clays last year I'd rather put the money into clays.

Well, that's a good question. I suppose that'd depend on how badly I want to eat Ramen noodles for months on end in order to get the knife I want. :D On a serious note, though, I'd probably say somewhere in the $200-$400 range.

Less than a year ago I had a hard time pulling the trigger on a $30 Ladybug as my first knife purchase. Fast forward to now, $220 for the Southard was a no-brainer. :)

JNewell wrote:It's a meaningless question as put. That's way too much for some Spyderco knives and not nearly enough for others. I've paid in the $400 range for some and thought I got solid value. If you have a $125 cap I hope it's because you don't have the cash to spare rather than because you don't think there are knives worth more than that.
Not really. I'm inclined to think we all have "limits" on what we'd spend for any given commodity, at least not unless we were under extreme duress of some kind.

I will say that I think it would be more interesting to ask the same question for a dozen different commodities. That would be more of an indication of whether someone is universally parsimonious or, like I expect the majority of us would be, has things they'd splurge on and things they would not.

As an example, I said I'd pay $1000 for "just the right" Spyderco. However, I have little use for, or interest in, watches, so the most I'd pay for a timepiece would be about $100. On the one hand, that's ridiculously low. On the other, it would still buy me a watch capable of keeping time more than well enough for my purposes. Same goes with knives. Beyond a certain point, you're almost always paying for one of three things. Either the "bells and whistles" of fancy materials and/or embellishment, or the "excess performance" of super-duper exotic steels on a knife that you will probably never use long enough in one session to dull AUS-6, or a "fashionable" maker's name.
