Not to sidetrack the thread, but what would you use to measure the thickness of your knives?

I don't care much for the looks of the Chokwe, but it has the thinnest flatground blade of all my Spyderco's, and I'd have to name it best slicer.
I modded the heck out of it BTW

Everyone (including me) has assumed that FFG is the best slicing grind. It is great of course but if the knife is a larger one like the Manix2 I believe the hollow grind 154CM blade to be a better slicer than the FFG M4 blade. The reason is the blade right at the edge is much thinner on the hollow grind blade. So, don't discount a grind because it's not FFG. But, as a rule I guess FFG is the best on smaller (mainly thinner) blades.

Allen R. wrote:I've been looking at small Spydercos for awhile now, and heres what I'm looking for. I want the thinnest blade possible made by spyderco regardless of blade length. I was using a slipjoint earlier and man that small little blade sliced like a dream. So what spyderco knife would you guys say has the thinnest blade and is the best slicer that is currently in production. The smallest spyderco i have is a delica and it slices great, but i think theres something out there better.
In my experience Calypso Jr. in laminated ZDP-189 is for sure the best slicer.

Calypso Jr. in VG-10 was known as the best slicer.

Very High Rockwell hardnes for laminated ZDP-189 (about Rc 65) and (therefore) very tiny blade make this little guy really the best slicer.

I am sure Sal would agree although he probably would not comment on this topic.

It is important to consider what you're slicing. For example if you're cutting woody brush, the H1 Spyderhawk SE is fearsome. for cutting through things like solid pieces of meat or cheese, a FFG blade is desirable. I find the Tenacious and Navaja to be favorites. general all around slicing will benefit from a thinner edge like on the Chapparal Stretch and Caly though if you are mostly cutting thinner items, a nice high hollow ground blade like mentioned above would be a good choice.

My vote is for a ZDP Dragonfly. It has an extremely sharp, thin blade (~2mm I think), is large enough to be easy to handle and usable, yet small enough to be carried ubiquitously.

I haven't used mine yet, just received it today, but it is extremely thin and sharp...should be a great slicer. This is really one of the better value Spydies out there right now. They can be had for $105 delivered. I'd held off on this one, since I really didn't like the looks of the knife. After closer inspection, this knife is S30v, a G10 scale with stainless liner on one side. and a Ti framelock on the other side with holes to lighten the load as a standard build. After holding and looking closer at this knife I have grown very fond of it. While not quite as smooth opening as some of the other Taiwan knives, it locks up solid and has a great feel in the hand. Very nice knife for the $$$ Another fine Spydie. :D

Might I just add in , LAVA. It feels thiner behind the edge than the chaparral. Though stock is a little thicker

A micrometer would be ideal.

That is really interesting...i like what you've done with that. This knife hasn't really interested me much until seeing your modded version.

Why not just do an epic edge reprofile? I've reprofiled my delica to under 9 degrees per side and it is a ridiculous slicer! Seriously, grind the edge on any kinda thin blade down and it'll be a better slicer than any super thin blade with a factory edge?

Who you trying to kid? I tried this, and wound up with oxygen and nitrogen molecules both clearly identifiable :D I took another quick pass/slice, and then identified carbon dioxide and methane. I must agree this is THE best slicer, followed by J.D. and Chokwe. Glad to see you got your Lava Trav. :spyder:

I tried using my Chaparral to cut one of my wife's farts in half but I passed out during the test. :D I'll have to try something with a longer blade next time. Maybe my GB. I'll just tie it to the end of a 10 foot pole. :D

Holes and more holes

Hey Jack,
That's what the holes on the Chokwe are for... lashing to a pole. It's good to go for these sort of, uh umm, tasks.

The Deacon wrote:Among the production Spydercos I own, the Chaparral wins. Hard to beat a 2mm thick FFG blade that's ground thin behind the edge. Next in line would be the Caly/Calypso family, with the exception of the SS Calypso Jr.
How do you think the old full size Dyad (is it the C46) plain blade would compare Paul?
