Not sure what laws are in the Netherlands, but I'm guessing a big folder is okay but a handgun is not. A Spyderhawk is a *lot* of cutting power in a fairly light thin package. If you are concerned about larger animals, consider running with a decent sized walking stick - the length will help keep you out of biting/clawing range and you can use the ground as a stabilization point as you get under the stick and reach for a blade. I understand several cultures (first one I think of is Russian woodsmen in the Ural/Caucasus areas) will use a long staff-style walking stick and a hollow-handled fixed blade knife for bear defense (a 6 foot spear pressed against the ground is a formidable defense against larger animals like bears and mountain lions) - also, some people wear a mask on the back of their heads so a mountain lion or similar large cat will think they are facing them, so the lion cannot "sneak up" on the wearer. Just FYI.
