Collector or user

50:50 - I have a lot of older "1980's" knives from Spyderco, Gerber, Benchmade, Cold Steel, and these are kept in their boxes... and my newer knives are mostly Spyderco... I consider Spyderco knives works-of-art from a functionality point of view... but I carry only about a half dozen (one or two at a time) with the Goddard Lightweight as my current favorite... (but I have been considering carrying the Sage 3)

Definitely both, I use all my knives too. Some more than others, but all get their share of pocket and cutting time.

I avoid saying that I "collect" knives because they're not on display and I don't try to get things that I feel will "increase in value" or anything like that. For the most part I have one knife in my pocket, almost always the same one. There's also a knife by the couch, one on the desk, one in the kitchen. I'm considering getting a Pacific Salt for the bathroom for those "compromised" situations when the mail needs to be opened.

I always seem to have to have another one. I wish someone could help me! They're "collecting" all around me.

I know... I need a 12 step program. At least it's good to be here with other knifeaholics. I don't personally know anyone that's got it as bad as I do.

On the issue of safe queens, I don't have any. I would theoretically use any of them. There are some that I don't use, but they're not officially safe queens. They're just knives I kind of, but not purposely, prefer not to use. And my collection is not a collection. It just a whole bunch of great knives that I really need to have.

I'm a user for sure...out of 100's of spydercos and an even bigger collection of all sorts of other knives...there isn't a knife that I own which hasn't been at least carried. Two knives which I can't bring myself to use however, are my CF Civilian, (too pretty to mess up the CF) and a big Caly. I do have duplicates of these knives so one is a user the others just sit there looking pretty....Just something about those two knives....My feeling in general is a knife needs to be used for it's intended purpose, or it's not really a knife. I have lots of duplicates of many Spyderco knives...when I use it up good, they I break out a new one, and start the process of using that one good. So technically I have knives that have never been used...but they are not Safe Queens, only knives waiting to be used.....I guess I'm a knife collector of sorts, but I have never sold any knife I own....I have given lots away, and I once traded a knife away....but mostly I use them for there intended purpose....Doc :D

Another accumulator here. Since the 60's, numerous brands, styles, everything. Whatever appears useful at the time. I've drifted towards Spyderco mostly because it feels as if Sal is designing a custom knife for my hand.

Then, there is the materials excellence. I'll blame Sal for my "steel Junky" attributes. The first steel chart was a spyderco chart explaining the Gin 1 ( called G2 at the time). Then they got bigger and better. I recall getting ATS 55 and wondering how they got all the performance out of that steel. It didn't seem like it would work as good as it did. VG10 set the hook even tighter. I recall the article explaining the S60V ( then 440V) Millie that was coming out and though I was raising a kid and broke, I vowed I had to have one of the new super steel. ( it took time but I did, and still do, along with all other notable millies since then <color doesn't count>)

Then there were more, and more, and more. Then the Mule team project which Sal didn't do just for profit. Between the designs, the prices, the time Sal put in on the forums, and the extra stuff like the Mule teams I reached the conclusion that Sal, like me, was a knife and materials experimenter , and he loved his job. It shows in his work.

Everything combined to make me loyal to a brand, which I had never done before. It was always the best available buy for the money, taking design, materials and build quality into consideration.

I still do buy Kershaws ( just got the Volt), Buck, GEC, Harsey, Old Camillus and old Schrade, and old "V" steel Gerbers.

Also love M2 Benchmades, and bought M4 benchmades before Spyderco brought them out.

I only buy usable knives and if they won't do the job for i will sell them and buy something else that i think i can use.

I have bought some big fixed blades some weeks ago that have not got any use so i could call them collectables.
I would be 95% user and 5% collector. :D

I geuss the answer for me would depend on the definition of user and collector. If "collector" means keeping strictly keeping the knives NIB, then no I am not a collector.

Then again I now own 15 Spyderco folders and 7 fixed blades. 2 more arriving on Monday. I know I have more than enough knives for personal use. I feel now I have a knife for any occasion or job but still want to accumulate more.

I identify with you'all. Something about :spyder: quality and materials is addicting.

Everyone needs a knife in the shower don't you know...No need to take the Rock Salt in there with you....the tasman will work out just fine...plus you can carve little animal shapes from your soap...always makes showering more fun! :p ...Doc :D

I consider myself to be both. I am blessed to be able to collect a couple of knives here and there that I have found to be beautiful and utilitarian.

I guess I'm in the last category. I have many more knives than I need for day-to-day use, but I never buy a knife that I know I won't use just to have it "in the collection". Everything I buy gets carried and used for a few days except the backups. Those are left NIB because I already know what they feel like and how they work.

I am mostly a collector. I carry my Ladybug Hawkbill Salt the most and my Dragonfly 2 G-10 some of the time. Sometimes I carry them both.
