Re: What Spyderco is in your pocket today??

for those of you that prefer deep carry and/or packing lots of blade into a little handle, you need to give the ikuchi a look. it's stylish, sleek, and slicey.
keep your knife sharp and your focus sharper.

That has been my house whiskey for years until it got popular and you can't find it anymore. If I had some, I would post it.
Right now, I have to settle for a couple others from the same distillery.

For the last few days, these 2 have been my companions. Switch it out for a PM2 this evening.

It was one of the first few knives from Spyderco that really caught my attention but at the time it had cost more than I was comfortable spending on a knife. I’m glad I eventually found one.
I like carrying it while backpacking and hiking mostly. It has come in handy at camp and on hike breaks for food prep. I like the tall blade profile for things like spreading peanut butter or tuna for a post hike sandwich.

The Junior is an amazing knife. It has to be one of the safest blades to cut with; no chance of your hand sliding forward onto the blade. Accidential piercings would be rare, and the tip is very robust due to the obtuse shape. But the most unusual thing about the Junior is its edge ratio. It packs a LOT of edge into a modest sized knife! Flatten one section of the blade? No worries, there's lots of real estate elsewhere!!
I think one reason it met with limited enthusiasm, was because it was marketed as a kid's first knife. So that put the self-esteem-enhancement crowd off of it immediately...who wants a kid's knife when you're a hard-drinkin, fight-startin, hard-rockin manly man. Another reason is that the tip, for all its strength and safety, is not good for piercing, and that limits its utility somewhat. There was a straight spine mod of this knife back in the day that was very attractive and utilitarian. It could also be modified into a bowie clip.

I wonder if that is part of why the Polestar hasn't taken off? Marketed originally as a model for the boy scouts. If so, I want more models for the boy scouts.

I would question if it actually is reprofiled.
I have one with the edge untouched and it looks very similar.

Very well put in regards to the Junior, I agree with everything you said. Although, after re-reading the description from Spyderco, I don’t know if the knife was explicitly marketed as a kids first knife. I think that was primarily a motivating factor for designing the knife but I still agree with you. Since that was mentioned in the description at all, it may have caused then preconceptions you had speculated.Bolster wrote: ↑Sat Dec 24, 2022 7:08 pmMushroom wrote: ↑Thu Dec 22, 2022 11:03 pmIt’s a nice one and definitely didn’t hand around long enough, in my opinion. Also, I really think Jeff could be on to something when it comes to the Polestar and Alcyone. I wonder if the switch to grey G10 has helped sales at all?

Re: What Spyderco is in your pocket today??
I was referring to the discussions on the forum at the time. I guess that's not strictly "marketing" is it, it's "the market speaking," which is a step removed. I recollect when the Junior was released, it was not infrequently referred to on various fora as a "kid's first knife."

I’m not really that much of a whisky drinker, and when I do I usually prefer Irish. But Buffalo Trace is something special, especially considering the price. It’s not too hard to find here in Canada, weird how that works.
Also, is that an MXG clip on that pm2? If so, we have the exact same knife lol.

No, normally I like the MXG series for these. However, Lynch came out with a Blacksmith finish that appears to hold up better than the black finish MXG. So far it has held up great! Satin or similar, I go for the MXGs.

Re: What Spyderco is in your pocket today??
I'd have to look at it under magnification to confirm but I think I've only touched it up lightly on the corners of the Sharpmaker. It's plenty sharp as is.
Last night I was wondering how I'd reprofile it and I think I'd use a CBN Sharpmaker rod in my Hapstone and use the corner to reprofile. I also have a set of course triangle stones or I'll buy a different triangle stone from Congress Tools
Of all the things I've lost I miss my mind the most!
