Re: What did you use your Spyderco for last?
Used the RockJumper to make a box. The spine works great to create a fold. Rounded spine glides easily.

used a serrated pscific salt to cut some plastic pallet straps.
razor sharp but didnt do any better than my coarse edged Siren I did the same thing with yesterday.
I've seen a lot of people mention how SE is better at this task or even required to make the cut, but coarse PE knives do just as well in my experience.

i can't imagine that a coarse pe will outperform a se on seatbelts. even if it's basically as good, i wouldn't want to take the chance in an emergency.vivi wrote: ↑Sun Feb 27, 2022 6:09 pmused a serrated pscific salt to cut some plastic pallet straps.

keep your knife sharp and your focus sharper.

Re: What did you use your Spyderco for last?
Would a coarse PE hold up the same as a good SE? Meaning if, in an emergency, someone needed to do a considerable amount of repeated rough cutting. I'm not saying it (PE) can or cannot. But personally, I'd rather bet on an SE blade in such a situation.

Re: What did you use your Spyderco for last?
I think if you completely wore off the cutting edge of both a coarse PE and a SE knife, the SE would be way more useful at that point.
I'm not trying to say SE has no place. I carried two SE spydies today. Just that I've noticed a lot of tasks where people say SE is the best choice, the coarse edged PE knives I've tested beside them kept up pretty well.
I can go either way. Coarse edged PE Pacific Salt, or a SE Pacific Salt, could be the last pocket knife I buy.
Re: What did you use your Spyderco for last?
iirc, the coarse edge PE sharpening works best to utilize a steel's higher toughness relative to its edge retention. So would you say that it would suit a 3V fixed blade well? 3V with a coarse finish for bushcraft work would no doubt excel over a higher grit finish.

Re: What did you use your Spyderco for last?
For camping and bushcraft, where (I imagine) most tasks would involve wood cutting/carving, I think a higher polished edge would suit better. Wood carving is mostly push-cutting; not slicing through rough media like rope or cardboard. When you're doing push cutting you want a very refined apex.razehound wrote: ↑Mon Feb 28, 2022 3:29 pmiirc, the coarse edge PE sharpening works best to utilize a steel's higher toughness relative to its edge retention. A polished edge will also be stronger than a very coarse edge.

Re: What did you use your Spyderco for last?

The polished edge would be better for wood carving, but the coarse edge is better for everything else around camp IMO. Like cutting meat

It will also cut longer, making it easier to go without sharpening supplies on shorter trips.
One of my go to camp knives is my thinned out PE Aqua Salt with a coarse edge. Does everything I need to around the camp site with no maintenance required.
Re: What did you use your Spyderco for last?
That's also what I was referring to. Coarse for actual "camp" type of work.

Playing with some wiring from the 1940s. Removing all electrical fixtures in preperation for removing the asbestos wallboard they are mounted to.

Reclaimed some 2x12 form boards for dead wood in the walls of my Daughters new house. Had to scrape concrete off so as not to dull the blade on my radial arm saw.
What did I use for the task?????? Yep.... you guessed it...the knife I had in my pocket. LOL!!!

That being said.....my saw blade is still sharp as can be!!!

On a brighter note....my edged cleaned up quite well and is ready to go at it again!!!

Re: What did you use your Spyderco for last?
oh wow, you're going to that high of a polish with how you use that knife? You'd save a tremendous amount of time using your coarsest stone on the bevel then applying a polished apex via microbevel. Much less time consuming than polishing all that steel above the apex.

Re: What did you use your Spyderco for last?
Yeah... the concrete was a little much but that's how it goes sometimes. Twenty minutes is not that much time when I enjoy sharpening a knife anyway. I'm using a 22* per side microbevel on most of my knives as it does hold up very well for my uses.vivi wrote: ↑Wed Mar 02, 2022 7:15 amoh wow, you're going to that high of a polish with how you use that knife?
