Are you saying that most tangs on these thicker bladed knives are equal to (about) the cross sectional area of steel located on one side or the other (not both) of that hole?

We'll be getting the knife back. We'll analyze the problem and make the necessary adjustments for the next run of the Bushcraft UK model. More than likely with a G-10 scale. It's the "real world" testing that molds the designs of the future.

That was some serious abuse. The holes underneath the handle DO look a little extreme. I wouldn't mind the added weight if it was more solid or completely solid underneath the handle.

Yes, I am. Years ago I dismantled a Navy MK2 (what most folks call a KaBar, regardless of maker) and was somewhat surprised to find the tang of the knife was only about 3/8" wide. It was not some cheap imitation either, I bought it through the Navy supply system. A couple of others I've checked were made the same way, and inquiries indicate it is standard construction.

That is for stacked leather handles. Someone here has posted x-ray pictures of both the Spyderco Temperance and a Mora (popular low-cost bushcrafting knife) showing the partial stick tangs. That means not only is the blade tang not the full width of the handle, it doesn't run the full length either. If you can see the tang between the scales (full width tang) and the knife doesn't feel horribly butt heavy in hand, there are probably holes under the scales to balance the knife.
I don't believe in safe queens, only in pre-need replacements.

Not very many left...

Just a note to advise that there are not very many of these Bushcraft knives left.

I went to the SFO today and picked up a couple. :D

They are absolutely beautiful. But there are very, very few of them left. So if you want one, pull the trigger right away.

A batoning video on Youtube of the Bushcraft:

Looks like he spent hours splitting wood, lol. Great real test though!

Too risky to try stabilized wood again? I think a micarta like on the Temperance 2 would be better than G-10, but that's just me.

Anyway...

Got mine today! Big crack in the handle, but beautiful wood anyway. I really don't like the chip in the spine that indicates it as a 2nd. This one is definitely a user.

If I buy one from another retailer that isn't a 2nd is it likely to crack or is it stabilized and under warranty?

AFAIK they are all seconds now, the whole run. No warranty.

Bushcrafter Matching Firesteel and replacement sheath

#230

Post by chas brookes »

Hi all
I was lucky enough to have a piece of wood kicking around that seemed to match the spalting on the Bushcrafter so I made myself a matching firesteel. I also had a leather sheath for a Mora which I had not been using with some minor mods and a bit of renovation it seems to be a nice fit for the Bushcrafter :)

That setup looks wonderful; almost as if it came from Spyderco like that.

Good job!
