Spyderco 2011 Prototype – Navaja
The Navaja is finally gearing up for production. This knife was among the first batch of ethnic designs that Ed made for Spyderco. Finally a maker was found who could do the ‘ratcheting’ of the opening action justice. Like an authentic Navaja, this blade makes a ratcheting-type sound when it’s opened. Supposedly it warned people that ‘trouble’ was coming. For those looking to complete their collection of Spyderco ethnic folders, this is a must have.

Spyderco 2011 Prototype – Tuff
I do believe it’s been about 7 years when I first saw the Tuff concept model, it looked promising but the concept model had always been fairly ‘rough’. This prototype looks pretty well finished to me.
I like the spiky scale with the Reeve Integral Lock, it’s grippy but didn’t seem too sharp. It didn’t seem likely to rip open my hand or anything. It’s big and massive. The fuller looks really cool, and I’m quite anxious to try it out, see how it cuts. The Tuff also makes me want to do overstrikes and spinewhacks; I’m curious just how tough this knife is. I have one major complaint though, the jimping on the spine and inside the choil is –to me- simply too smooth. It doesn’t match up with the grippy G10 scale and the spiked back plate. The knife screams ‘hard use’ folder, and it seems logical to me that you want it to stick to your hand. The jimping is an important interface with the hand. Why not make the jimping nice and deep, like on the Paramilitary 2 for example?

Spyderco 2011 Prototype – SpyLeone
Yes, I know it says LionSpy on the blade and it´s been referred to that way, but I´m sticking to what it said on the tag. Also, Spyderco is looking for a name for this folder, so if you have a suggestion – let them know. Anyway, this one is another massive folder. I´m not too keen on the tip, I prefer something more pointy. It looks very solid though, hard to break. I do like the techno look of the folder.

Junior and the Tuff are the only ones that have really spiked an interest so far with me to be honest.
Mr. Blonde, any news you can give on the refinements to the back lock?

Love the looks of the Tuff. How long is it?
As much as I love ethnic Schempp's, I just can't get behind the Navaja. I like the lines but the CF and the screws (especially in the bolster!) make it look mor SciFi than ethnic. In other words, I like the design, but wish construction was modeled after the Persians.
