Hollywood makes the unusual spooky or horrifying. The truth is, anything can be a weapon. The most dangerous person in the room is someone who knows how to use anything to their advantage.

Lay the handle of a 1/2 inch blade across the palm of your hand with the blade sticking out of the closed fist and strike at someone. This is the most dangerous way to use a knife and nobody will see it coming.

The civilian was designed to be a super effective SD knife even without defensive knife training, it makes sense that a slash cut is the most simple and organic method of attack, like we see with most animal attacks for example. a quick slash seems to be most effective, and for a slash cutter spydercos hawkbills or reverse s blades are most effective imo. Wharnies won’t be as effective for slashing but they have the ability for straight penetration while still having a low tip placement to transfer the same cutting power from the heel to the tip. A good leaf blade like on the temperance models also look like “mean” blade shapes imo, effective for SD and for all around utility. But for pure meanness the reverse s shape takes the cake for me, there was a reason it was the choice of knife for Hannibal lector ;)

You don’t believe that blade length gives someone an advantage in a self defense situation? I would disagree, take two people that are completely untrained and one of them is trying to fatally attack the other, the more reach on one’s self defense tool is generally going to give them the advantage. I agree though that the most important aspect of self defense with a knife comes down to one’s skill level or experience in training. And then I believe the “right” blade shape doesn’t matter all that much. Leaf, drop, spear, clip, wharnie, hawkbill. The “right blade” for self defense might be a little overrated, because practically most of the various knife blade shapes out there have been used and advertised in SD knife culture. I believe the handle ergonomics: how easy and effective it locks into the hand and deploys, and the blade size are actually more important features of a good SD knife, you can really make “any” blade shape work if you train accordingly to it..

Knives are tools. Bullies are mean. Visual Intimidation can be a type of “warning-self defense”, like brightly colored frogs letting you know they are poisonous.

A guy told me a story once, never knew if it was true, but he was getting harassed by 3 guys and it seemed like he was going to be jumped, but he had his gun in his wasteband in appendix position and instead of arguing back to these guys he just sort of positioned his hand on it like an old cowboy would hold his belt and that was enough to make it clearly print and that was enough to make them leave him alone. It probably counts as brandishing but then he was also about to get beat or worse and didn't have to draw it.

There's also a story in an old Blade magazine about a guy that fends off some guys just by pulling out (I think) a Harpy and picking his fingernails with it.

I myself am not sure what the meanest is. Or the meanest-looking. To many people nowadays, ANY Spyderco knife will be scary-looking. Especially if it has serrations.

I suppose I would say the Civilian/Matriarch.

But in reality, it isn't the knife itself that's scary, but the person wielding it. More real-life mayhem has been committed with common, ordinary utilitarian knives, usually cheap kitchen knives and machetes, than probably all of the purposely-designed combat knives in the world.

I've dabbled in many martial arts, and at least 5 of them knife arts. I've also used knives to get me out of jams twice. Have the ag assault to prove it.

Blade length is important and so is blade profile that is why I carry a Spyderco Native Chief.

Yet again, if I did not want you to know that I had a blade I'd palm a very tiny Basinelli Pika which has a 1 inch blade on it and strike you...and if I thought I was loosing the fight, I could bring in the blade aspect in on my strikes.

I always liked how that photo turned out. Right place at the right time. Seriously though, the Matriarch is something different, and for a great price.

Surprised no one mentioned the Battlestation so far.

It's definitely what you would get if you mated an Ayoob and a Para 3, with a little stoutness mixed in.

The angular handles and upswept blade makes for one mean small knife.

ladybug hawkbill salt. you can easily put it between your knuckles and it will do a ton of damage. obviously, it's smaller than some other 'mean' spydies, but it's more concealable.
keep your knife sharp and your focus sharper.

Of all my Spyderco’s, I think my blacked out and waved Matriarch is the one I would hesitate most to pull out in public. Even my Ayoob SE looks friendly in comparison :)

Something is wrong on the Spyderco website. Pretty sure that's a stretch.
