The more I carry and use the UKPK the more I like it

My top three most carried knives are the Chaparral, Urban, and UKPK… but really the UKPK has run away with it by a large margin. Have at least half a dozen and have gifted away several more.

The plain edge LC200N Salt has hardly left my side since I got it. Darn near edc perfection for me.

When the Magnacut Salt UKPK comes out and the exchange rate drops to something reasonable, I am going to buy two, one of me and one for my wife who forgets and runs her knives through the washing machine with her clothes.

I've got the leaf shape blade version of this knife from the original drop a few years ago. Count me in as the UKPK being an amazing knife, for a great price!

Top 3 for me with ergos. Melts right into my hand. Thin blade, light weight and narrow knife. One of the few I like the wire clip on.

I hate when people say "I won't get one because it doesn't have a lock" Is that because it means it's not fidgety...therefore an inferior knife too a lot of people?? If it's for safety reasons, there's no need for that! That half stop is pretty strong, plus the knife is designed to utilize the finger choil, which prevents its from closing while in use. I've used mine many times in the warehouse over the years, never once had an issue.

I’m certainly one of those people who won’t get a ukpk because the lack of lock, if the alternative with a lock didn’t exist I’d probably get one. But to say a lock doesn’t add any extra function of safety and security especially when it comes to some tougher use cuts is plain wrong, locking folders are valued for good reason. The knife is great but it’s being restricted around a ridiculous law that thankfully I don’t have to deal with.

Well I like locks as much as the next person but the UKPK is outstanding. True it doesn't lock but it is rock solid compared with the Calypso line. I have a Caly 3.5 and it's good in some ways but the lock rock is ridiculous and makes it feel flimsy and unsafe even though it probably isn't. The UKPK, particularly the G10 HH models I have, feels like a fixed blade in comparison when putting some weight into a cut. In the closing direction, the combination of choil and decent spring makes it totally safe. I'd love it if a Caly was made with a solid lock but until then the UKPK is a clear winner for me.

I agree with you 100%. I owned three Caly3.5 in VG10 and all three had unacceptable lock rock. I sold two of them and kept one for the collection. As you said, my G10 UKPKs feel like a tank in comparison. The half stop and the finger choil compensate the lack of a lock for me and I don’t feel unsecured when I cut with my slipie.

Well that’s a great shame. I don’t know HH reasoning behind this decision because those things must fly out their door. I remember the leaf version selling out very quickly.

If this knife had more of a following stateside we’d likely see sprints and shop exclusives in G-10 and other materials with supersteel blades all the time.
Imagine a g-10 / full length back spring with Rex45, Cruwear, K390 or 15v - how cool would that be?
Drop point or leaf blade, just take my money.

I own a Gin-1 version combo edge that I found cheap last year. It is almost a safe queen as that is my only Spyderco model that is anywhere that old.
But I have used it and love it.

I would be interested by a G10 HH version but I also dont know what price they would sell today. If it is similar to the Salt version, I will probably just end up with one of those later anyway.

I don't see why Spyderco couldn't make one in a different red for the rest of the world. Personally, the current FRN version in a different red and semi-polished would make me run to the bank.

I even remember one or two people claiming the backsprings on theirs broke. I wonder if that had to do with the split spring design.

There was a time, around several years ago now, where quite a few people had broken backsprings on their penknives. But I haven't heard anything about it in the more recent models. Hopefully the problem was ironed out.

Heinnie is a shop in the UK. Full name Heinnie Haynes and usually shortened to HH when describing knife models. They've had a few shop exclusive Spyderco knives, the most famous ones here being the red G-10 / FRN penknives and Urbans. I'm not sure if they're available from Spyderco directly too, but definitely no other shops sold them.

Yes, hopefully, the backspring issue was CQI'd. My UKPK Salt was bought back in 2021.

Funny enough, I had seen Heinnie mentioned in posts before, and had mistakenly thought it was the name of a custom maker who did specially approved knife modifications.

Yes would be brilliant!
I’m keen to try out S45VN - it’s highly probable I won’t be able to tell any real world difference between it and S30V, but I could see myself buying more than one of these if it were to go ahead and the price wasn’t excessively higher than the original HH version.

Interestingly, less than 20 years ago, S30V was considered a super steel. To some, it was THE super steel. So it begs the question, what exactly IS a super steel? "Super steel" is only a temporary designation given to new blade steels, until they become commonplace enough to no longer be considered special, and are replaced with the next big thing(s).

I've kinda regarded S30V as my standard coming from both Spyderco and CRK, when I was into them. At a later date, today's super steel will regarded as average or a crapper.

No doubt, there will be a time in the future where people will see steel, or another future metal, which will be razor sharp and never need sharpened.

I love the G10 with the full steel back spring, but those are hard to come by. I like the price, color and steel of the SPY27 models because they seem to be on sale at a lot of dealers. The S110V model doesn't look to bad either. I'm currently waiting for the Magnacut Salt to drop.

I have two, UKPKs, PE and SE in LC200N. I chose them specifically because they're rustproof and I felt that quality was important in a coastal environment. As it turns out, any of the steels would have been fine for how I use them: light household duties like cutting packaging, reducing cardboard, and occasional food prep.

I pimped the PE with Ti scales from VaporPuffin, and I now absolutely love the feel and quality of that knife in the same way I love the feel of non-FRN Chaparrals and Ti-scaled Manixes. I think the UKPK shines really brightly both as a light, thin, disappear-in-your pocket EDC and as a high-end, hoity-toity gent's folder, depending on the scales.

I like the Ti scales so much that I ordered another set in a different pattern to pair with a MagnaCut blade, whenever I can get one. Why MagnaCut? Good question! For me, I guess I just admire the steel for its balance of desirable properties, and because I already have the other steel I would prefer, LC200N. Like I said, any of them would do.

yeah. that's my problem. i've experienced bd1n, s30v, lc200n, and magnacut. i'm also definitely getting a magnacut manix.

i considered s110v and spy27 primarily because i don't have either of those steels yet. magnacut would be my first choice otherwise.
