I think that is the question we're all going to ask....and learn?

"Talkin' Story";

Many years ago, we were touring the very impressive Masahiro factory. I asked Koji, the President, why his Daido made proprietary MBS-26 was able to punch so high above it's weight? He said they followed the meticulous heat treating instruction provided by Daido. This included heat treating in lead pots, which I watched. The secret" knowledge of the blade industry never ceases to amaze me.

And the lead didn't melt? That must be some sort of magic or something. How did they do that?

I see. I didn't understand that. I wondered how it could be put into lead pots and heated. Hahaha! I'm a little slow, today, I guess. I'll blame in on my COVID booster I just got.

What does 19C27 steel bring to the table compared to VG-10?
I'm interested in trying it because its close to a pure chromium steel. The composition seems identical to MBS-26 as it's missing the Mo, Co, and V that VG-10 contains. Not sure what that does as most similar steels I've used have at least 2 of the 3. Also the hrc might be run higher than VG-10 or MBS-26 if Sal takes Shawn's advice. Not to mention the MBS-26 has only been available in kitchen cutlery but the 19c27 Sal is requesting from Sandvik is thicker, presumably for different uses.

19c27 is used some in kitchen knives and has a pretty good reputation in that use. It is basically AEB-H made by Sandvick. It is very similar to ginsanko/gin3/ginsan steel that is also popular in Japanese kitchen knives and has good reputation there. It is also pretty similar to aus-10 and should have similar performance. I seem to remember Spyderco using aus-10 at some point in the past. Larrin talks about AEB-H some here https://knifesteelnerds.com/2019/03/04/all-about-aeb-l/

These are absolutely my favorite threads, and why Spyderco is my #1.

Feels like a home-cooked meal.
